SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT TECH PREP EDUCATION ARTICULATION AGREEMENT

San Diego Unified School District ROP Law Office Procedures & San Diego City College CBTE 221 Legal Office Procedures I (3.0 units) 2004-2005

AGREEMENT SUMMARY Students who complete the San Diego Unified High School District articulated course in Law Office Procedures at Crawford Educational Complex, School of Law & Business and meet the San Diego Community College District defined performance and competency criteria outlined in this agreement will be granted 3.0 units of college credit at San Diego City College for CBTE 221 Legal Office Procedures I. The student will receive the college credits upon submission of the Tech Prep Articulation packet that includes the SDCCD application and the Tech Prep Articulation Certification form that has been signed by the high school instructor.

PURPOSE OF AGREEMENT Through this articulation agreement in the field of Legal Assisting, faculty from both districts coordinate instruction and student learning (including assessments of knowledge, skills, and abilities to ensure each articulated student's transition from high school to community college occurs without unnecessary duplication of effort or loss of credit. Additional reasons for establishing a Tech Prep Education Articulation Agreement:  Successful completion of the secondary course or program identified in this agreement is recognized as an integral part of educational preparation in the field of Legal Assisting and related majors.  Students may apply the units acquired in the secondary program toward graduation requirements.  The process of coordinating and refining curriculum in the articulated courses will result in an updated, more effective instructional program.  San Diego Community College District will benefit by attracting students who have attained proficiency in core competencies and demonstrated an interest in and commitment to the field of Legal Assisting.  Secondary students will recognize the value of their instruction and fieldwork as part of their total career and life skills preparation.  Students become more aware of career opportunities and job requirements available in the field of Legal Assisting and other related fields.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN San Diego Unified High School District and San Diego Community College District will implement the Tech Prep Education Articulation Agreement using the plan specified below: A. Program teachers from both institutions will exchange course outlines and curricula for the courses being considered for articulation. The articulation review will define the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability levels necessary for students to earn the college credit and transition smoothly to the next level of education. The review will examine the required tests, written assignments, and extended projects considered for articulation through the Credit by Exam process. B. To apply for and receive San Diego Community College District credit for CBTE 221 Legal Office Procedures I, the student shall complete the following agreed upon minimum curriculum competencies:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of legal office procedures concepts on objective tests and essay questions with a minimum of 70 percent accuracy. 2. Define and explain legal terminology by correctly matching, without the aid of references, legal terms with appropriate definitions. 3. Identify jurisdiction and venue of a given court. 4. Compose and correctly prepare correspondence to the court, other attorneys, and court related agencies with mailable accuracy. 5. Explain in writing the difference between "approved" forms and "adopted" forms. 6. Determine correct response dates for legal matters using a calendar, tickler, and/or computer system. 7. Correctly organize and format legal documents by preparing a Complaint, a Summons, a motion, a will, and a 30-Day Notice to Quit, using materials and information provided in class. 8. Explain in writing the necessary steps in filing and serving documents. 9. Apply general legal research techniques and be able to identify and correctly write legal citations.

Reading Assignments Appropriate readings may include but are not limited to: 1. Read sections of legal reference books.

Read handouts distributed in class that apply to local legal procedures and actual law office practices. 4. Read handouts from guest speakers who work in legal offices.

Writing Assignments Writing assignments are required and may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Write a one-page explanation of the necessary steps in filing and serving documents. 2. Compose legal correspondence. 3. Write a report on the job responsibilities and career path of a legal office assistant.

Appropriate Outside Assignments Outside assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Research and submit a paper about the field of legal office procedures. 2. Visit a law library and prepare a bibliography of at least ten different legal reference sources. 3. Organize a 3-ring binder that includes a table of contents and contains all pertinent notes, handouts and assignments from the course.

Appropriate Assignments Demonstrating Critical Thinking Critical thinking assignments are required and may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Evaluate the mailability of correspondence prepared for the court, other attorneys, and court-related agencies. 2. Explain legal terminology and use it correctly. 3. Identify correctly written legal citations.

ARTICULATION OF CREDITS In order for a student to receive San Diego Community College District credit for CBTE Legal Office Procedures I, the student must: 1) complete the articulated high school course/program identified in this agreement with a grade of “B” or better, 2) complete the articulated high school/ROP final exam with a grade of “B” or better, 3) complete the paperwork in the Tech Prep Articulation Packet (college application and Tech Prep Articulation Certification form), and 4) submit the packet to the secondary instructor.

The secondary instructor must: 1) Assign course grade, date, and sign Tech Prep Articulation Certification form in the packet and send it to the Tech Prep Associate Dean at 3375 Camino del Rio South, Suite 335, San Diego, CA 92108.

SUGGESTED CAREER PATHWAY OPTIONS The courses suggested in the following table are connected to Tech Prep career pathways and may lead students to either a Certificate of Achievement or an Associate Degree.
