GPSD Course Syllabus Course Title: Honors Algebra 2 Grade Level: 9-12 Credit Available: 1.0 Pre-Requisite: Algebra 1 and Geometry

Teacher Contact Information: Name: Jalynn Dinkins Room Number: 206 Email Address: [email protected] Phone Number: 541-474-5710 ext 190 District Webpage: www.grantspass.k12.or.us

Course Description: This course is designed to extend the concepts learned in Algebra 1 and introduce related topics. Linear, absolute value, quadratic, polynomial, radical, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions will be covered. In addition, students will sketch and analyzed graphs, perform function operations, solve systems, solve and graph inequalities, work with complex numbers, extend previous knowledge of trigonometry, and use statistical inference.

Course Expectations: Being an active participant in math class is also important to your learning. Participation includes coming to class everyday prepared and on time, as well as, being an active learner by asking questions and doing assignments regularly. Students are expected to bring workbook, textbook, calculator and pencil to class every day.

Required Supplies: o Graphing Calculator (TI-84 recommended) o Binder, lined paper, and graph paper o Pencil o Textbook (Big Ideas: Algebra 2)

Grading Criteria: 10% Online Assignments, Projects, Warm-ups, and Daily Work 80% Assessments (Tests and Quizzes) 10% Semester Final Academic grades will reflect a student’s mastery of the subject’s knowledge and skills according to state standards.

Grades will be issued at the end of the first and second semester. Progress reports will be mailed home at the end of 6 and 12 weeks. Parents and students are encouraged to follow progress on Power School. Visit the district webpage to learn more about how to access your account.

District Grading Scale: A Mastery (90-100%) B Approaching Mastery (80-89%) C Proficient (70-79%) F Not proficient (Below 69%)

Late Work or Missing Work: Students must complete assignments and submit them to the teacher in order to demonstrate that they are working toward proficiency. All late work must be turned in the class period before the unit or mid-unit test for credit. After the unit or mid-unit test, all missing assignments will not be given credit.

Reassessment: Students may be given opportunities to retake assessments they fail, or wish to retake, in order to demonstrate proficiency, provided that they are making adequate progress toward proficiency. If a student has met the retake requirements, and chooses to retake an assessment, the retake score will replace the original score (even if the retake score is lower). Students will have the opportunity during Office Hours to retake any tests and/or quizzes (80% Assessment portion of their grade), if all retaking requirements have been met.

Reassessment Requirements o Test Retakes o All online assignments for the unit must be completed and turned in before the unit test o Students must complete test corrections o Students must complete an online practice o Retakes must be completed before the next unit test o Quiz Retakes o Students must complete quiz corrections o Retakes must be completed before the corresponding unit test o Retakes will occur during office hours

Course Standards: Semester 1 o Linear Functions o Quadratic Functions o Quadratic Equations and Complex Numbers o Polynomial Functions Semester 2 o Rational Exponents and Radical Functions o Exponential and Logarithmic Functions o Rational Functions o Statistics o Trigonometry

Textbook/Resources: Students can access the Big Ideas Algebra 2 textbook online. Each student will create an account at www.bigideasmath.com. This online account will have access to the textbook, help videos, class assignments, and other resources. Students will be assigned homework to be completed online via this website.

Class Policies: An effective learning environment in a math course requires limiting distractions ( i.e. ipods, cell phones, gaming devices, etc.), participation, attention to detail and being an active learner.

Academic Support: Students will be provided the opportunity for additional academic support during CAVE Period and/or Office Hours. CAVE will be used for tutoring, making up assignments, and studying. Office Hours will be used for test and quiz make-ups and retakes.

Differentiation strategies available in this class may include extension activities, acceleration, or other activities, depending on the needs of the student.
