VIRGINIA ULDRICK, OF 15 GREENVILLE, ON THE OCCASION OF COMPLETING HER 16 FIFTIETH YEAR OF PUBLIC SERVICE IN ARTS 17 EDUCATION IN THE PALMETTO STATE AND WISHING 18 HER MANY MORE YEARS OF DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE 19 CONCEPTS AND PROGRAMS IN THE ARTS, HUMANITIES, 20 AND OTHER ACADEMIC STUDIES. 21 22 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note with pride 23 the remarkable accomplishments and contributions of Dr. Virginia 24 Uldrick over the past fifty years to arts education in South 25 Carolina; and 26 27 Whereas, Dr. Virginia Uldrick, a native of Greenville, is a graduate 28 of Furman University having received a Bachelor of Arts Degree 29 in Music and the University of South Carolina with a Master’s of 30 Arts Degree in Music and Administration. Her doctoral studies in 31 administration, conducting, and music education were at Columbia 32 University, a student of Howard Murphy, Norville Church, Harry 33 Robert Wilson, and Marion Magill. She also studied choral 34 literature and conducting with Robert Shaw and Roger Wagner; 35 and 36 37 Whereas, Dr. Uldrick helped develop and establish the South 38 Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and was the first and has 39 been the only President of the School for the Arts and Humanities. 40 She has been serving in that position since the school began in 41 1981 with a Summer Honors Program held on the campus of 42 Furman University; and

1 [686] 1 1 2 Whereas, in September of 1999, under the leadership of Dr. 3 Uldrick, the school transitioned from its nineteen-year history as a 4 nationally renowned summer program with outreach programs to a 5 year-round center for arts education serving all of South Carolina, 6 its arts educators, and student artists; and 7 8 Whereas, Dr. Uldrick was the founding Principal of the Fine Arts 9 Center in Greenville, and served twenty years as the Artistic and 10 Choral Director of the Singing Christmas tree. She has been 11 honored with the Elizabeth O’Neil Verner Award for Outstanding 12 Achievements in the Arts, Order of the Palmetto, and the 13 Governor’s Award for Distinction; and 14 15 Whereas, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, Dr. Uldrick has 16 always been active in church affairs. She formally served as 17 soprano soloist, youth director and choir director at Buncombe 18 Street Methodist Church. She directed the Bell Telephone Choir 19 and served as the Music Minister of the Associate Reformed 20 Presbyterian Choir and the Westminster Presbyterian Church 21 Choir; and 22 23 Whereas, Virginia and her husband, Marion Uldrick, are blessed 24 with one daughter, Lisa Parris; a grandson, Scott; and a 25 granddaughter, Nicole; and 26 27 Whereas, an advocate of building partnerships and collaborations, 28 Dr. Uldrick has designed and shaped a distinguished career in the 29 arts and education. The most rewarding part of her job is to see 30 her former students grow into mature and successful adults; and 31 32 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of 33 South Carolina are extremely proud of Dr. Virginia Uldrick; she is 34 an outstanding individual and an excellent arts educator; she has 35 given freely and most generously of her time and talent to the 36 children of her community, county, and this great State; and we are 37 pleased to have this opportunity to salute her and accord her 38 special recognition for her commitment to education in South 39 Carolina. Now, therefore, 40 41 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 42 concurring: 43

1 [686] 2 1 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 2 Carolina, by this resolution, express their sincere congratulations 3 and gratitude to the highly esteemed Dr. Virginia Uldrick, of 4 Greenville, on the occasion of completing her fiftieth year of 5 public service in arts education in the Palmetto State and wish her 6 many more years of developing innovative concepts and programs 7 in the arts, humanities, and other academic studies. 8 9 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 10 Dr. Virginia Uldrick. 11 ----XX----
