You must bring The Brief Bedford Reader with you to class. There will also be assignments from the Hacker book, and I will tell you when to bring that also.

Course goals:  Become a critical and analytical reader of various types of texts  Give constructive criticism and feedback on the work of the other writers in the class  Edit your own work carefully and perceptively  Summarize, paraphrase or quote from other texts – CORRECTLY - as part of your own work  Write a research paper related to the course themes or another topic agreed upon with the teacher. Course requirements:  Two take-home essays with at least two drafts  Three in-class essays, including summaries. Additional in-class writing may be added.  Research paper – 5 to 7 pages.  Your attendance so that the class discussion can flourish – no more than 3 absences. It will affect your grade.  Doing the required readings and submitting assignments on time  Those who do not do the majority of the work and are often absent will receive a final grade of F.  Those who are usually present and do all the in-class essays BUT none or very few of the take-home essays will also receive a final grade of F.  Quizzes at the beginning of class relating to the reading assignments for that day.  Frequent grammar review as needed.  NOTE: Students who frequently fail the in-class essays because of grammar and other reasons may be required to repeat the class.  LATENESS: I will make a final check of attendance at 9:45am. Anyone who comes in later than that will be considered absent. Absences, as above, affect your grade.

Here is the final grade breakdown:  Quizzes and Participation 10%  In-class essays and other in-class writing 35%  Essays done in drafts 35%  Documented Essay 20%
