HOLLY SHELTER MIDDLE SCHOOL

FEBRUARY 29, 2012

MEMBERS PRESENT:

ELEANOR TOPPING, AMY SANDLIN, SCOTT ANDERSEN, ELIZABETH HARLOW, AMY KYLE, JANEEN SPENCER, ______, POLLY TAIT, AMANDA SHEDAKER, KELLY MEDDOCK, ASHLEY SKINNER, SONNA SLOAN, BILL GRAHAM, REGINA CONNORS, JAMES HEMBREE, SHERRY PINTO, AMATULLAH STANBACK, BOB HARRELL.

1) SHAC (Anderson)– We identified one goal for each population for this school year:

 Faculty: destination walk (track your mileage and celebrate when we have covered the distance to our destination)

 Students: participation in 5k runs (GOTR, Relay for Life)

 Families: Health Fair (similar to Castle Hayne’s)

Anderson is getting lots of good ideas for our healthy school initiative. Please be sure to email suggestion to him so he can keep track. Additionally, all staff members are welcome to provide input on daily fitness activities. Anderson will also need ideas and contacts for the health fair.

2) PBIS/PLC/ISS (Topping/Tait) – From A Framework for Understanding Poverty to mindfulness. Topping presented on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Habits of the Mind. She would like to bring this into focus for staff (to help rejuvenate) but also as a model for character building for students.

3) Q3 Mastery (Connors) – Math is going well. Each grade did a major pre-test and has multiple mini-assessments to gauge proficiency.

4) Title I Budget/Afterschool Busses (Pinto) –

 Team decided to put a small amount of money toward taxi vouchers. Additional money will be put toward more community events. Discussed the possibility of another Coffee in Creekwood event.

 After school busses begin 3/6. Eva will get passes out to staff. 5) Q4 Tutors/EVAAS Data/EOG Prep (Pinto) – Four tutors already hired, two more are being reviewed. Tutors will start 3/25. Student data given to grade levels. Grade level teams are responsible for coming up with a plan for implementation of small group remediation and whole group support.

6) Elective Pull Outs (Sandlin) – Not an issue since implementation of 8th grade’s “Request to miss electives” form.

7) Computer Lab Sign Up (Sandlin) – Labs are booked up for months in advance. If you reserve a lab and are not able to use it, please let everyone know so someone else can take advantage.

8) Open Forum

 BYOT – student wrote a letter to Pinto arguing that students should be allowed to bring their own ebooks. Team is supportive of technology, but not open to allowing students to bring expensive and fragile equipment into the classroom.

 Debate Team – Way to go Donna Sloan!

 8th Grade AVID – Explore Test on 3/1

 Spelling Bee – 3/15

 Best Foot Forward – “Best act so far.” Jeremy’s act slotted to go first.

 ISS – “Everything is going much better.” Grade level management of smaller behaviors is working well.

 Broadcast – request to move broadcast to the afternoon, per our BOY plan. Pledge, moment of silence, and anything earth-shattering in the morning. Regular announcements to begin at 3:20.

 Web page – Sandlin to rework website per county guidelines. Request to have department heads give her a list of quality educational links to go on the “Student” page.
