Version incorporating amendments as at 1 June 2004
1. Objective The objective of these Regulations is to prescribe certain mandatory safety standards for lighters, in order to— (a) ensure that lighters sold in Victoria function safely; and (b) reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths caused by children under the age of 5 years playing with lighters. 2. Authorising provisions These Regulations are made under sections 59 and 69 of the Consumer Affairs Act 1972. 3. Definitions In these Regulations— S. 3 def. of "Commonwealth Regulations" means the Trade "Common- wealth Practices (Consumer Product Safety Regulations" Standard) (Disposable Cigarette Lighters) amended by S.R. No. Regulations of the Commonwealth (1997 41/2004 No. 21) as in force from time to time; reg. 4. "lighter" has the same meaning as it has in the Commonwealth Regulations.

4. Requirements that apply before lighters may be sold in Victoria The requirements imposed by the Commonwealth Regulations on lighters apply to lighters in Victoria. ═══════════════

ENDNOTES 1. General Information The Consumer Affairs (Product Safety) (Lighters) Regulations 1998, S.R. No. 44/1998 were made on 21 April 1998 by the Governor in Council under sections 59 and 69 of the Consumer Affairs Act 1972, No. 8276 and came into operation on 21 April 1998. The Consumer Affairs (Product Safety) (Lighters) Regulations 1998 will sunset 10 years after the day of making on 21 April 2008 (see section 5 of the Subordinate Legislation Act 1994).
