Placement: (For courses 10 trough106) Think carefully about your placement in this course: Will this course be challenging for you? Do you want to major or minor in Italian Studies and will you have enough time to do so? If you think you might not be in the right course, please speak with your professor immediately. Keep in mind that once you have completed a course in the language sequence-courses numbered 10-106; you will not be able to skip a level. If the course that is at your level is closed, we advise you to wait a semester and enroll in the right course.

Objectives: By the end of this semester most students will be able to function at different ranges of the intermediate level of the language proficiency (intermediate low, mid and high) and some will show proficiency in the advanced range. The course will follow a series of thematic units which will help you to improve your language skills (speaking, writing, reading, listening) while deepening your understanding of Italian culture.

Garzanti, Dizionario inglese-italiano (recommended), a free online version is located at http://www.garzantilinguistica.it, you must register in order to have access.

NB: THE USE OF ON LINE TRANSLATORS WILL BE CONSIDERED AS CHEATING.

Homework: You are expected to study the grammar and prepare all assignments before coming to class. During the semester you will be asked to write short compositions on different topics and on Italian films. These should be 350 words minimum, typed, double-spaced. Oral presentations will also be required during the semester. You can access the movie listed for the class on LATTE. Pease make sure to watch the movies ahead of the time of the discussion in class. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Attendance: Learning to speak another language demands in-class participation. Therefore, MORE THAN 3 ABSENCES WILL INFLUENCE YOUR FINAL GRADE.

Tutoring: Brandeis offers a free tutoring service in case you need extra help or you would just like extra practice in Italian. Language courses offer only 52/39 classroom hours to speak, read, write, and listen to French/Spanish/Italian. Many students choose to complement those classroom hours with supplementary work with BUGS program. A tutor has office hours each week when students can drop in for help with written or oral Italian.

La Tavola Italiana: There will be a weekly meeting of the Italian Table to give students the opportunity to speak Italian in a relaxing and informal environment. You are required to join this group at least three times during the semester. If you are unable to attend the Italian Table, please contact the BUGS Leader. Please do not wait until the end of the semester to do so.

Email policy: Email will be the best way to contact me outside the class and office hours., please be advised that I will not discuss sensitive information, such as your grade, over email. Please make an appointment to speak with me in person if you have questions about your standing in the class.

Quizzes/assessment: One test will follow each thematic unit which will include grammar + vocabulary + cultural questions. NO MAKE-UP DATES unless previously arranged with the instructor for EXCEPTIONAL REASONS.

Midterm: a skit presentation and/or a written assessment TBA Final: There will be a written and oral final exam. NO DATE CHANGE is allowed for the written exam. If you have a conflict with another language exam, please talk to your instructor and to the registrar to make the appropriate arrangements at least two weeks prior to the date scheduled by the University. The exam is TBA

Oral proficiency interviews: During the semester, (during midterm and finals) you will have an oral interview with your instructor to determine your level of language proficiency. This will help to improve and evaluate your aural skills in Italian and also will serve as a general assessment for the Italian program.
