Supplementary table 1: The search “Global ischemia in mice” in PubMed 19th January 2013 returned 623 results. 31 of the 623 papers were singled out as examples of the different ways of inducing GCI found in the available literature. For each study we report 10 different parameters which can influence the outcome and GCI reproducibility. For each study we report: the mouse strain and age used, the pre-operative procedure (fasting), 4 dif- ferent approaches to the surgical procedure (choise of anesthetics, occlusion time and arteries occluded, if hypotension is induced, maintenance of body and scalp temperature), the post-operative procedure (post-surgery recovery), exclusion criteria, mortality, region specific delayed neuronal cell death and if any neurological tests were performed on the mice post-operatively. This table clearly illustrate the variability in how GCI is induced in mice. Abbreviations: Bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAo), global cerebral ischemia (GCI).
