SHARP OF THE UNITED 13 STATES ARMY WHILE HE WAS SERVING A TOUR OF 14 MILITARY DUTY IN AFGHANISTAN, AND TO EXPRESS TO 15 HIS FAMILY THE PROFOUND APPRECIATION OF A 16 GRATEFUL STATE AND NATION FOR HIS LIFE, 17 SACRIFICE, AND SERVICE. 18 19 Whereas, with deep appreciation, the members of the South 20 Carolina General Assembly honor, on behalf of all South 21 Carolinians, the great sacrifice that the men and women of the 22 United States Armed Forces make for the ideals of liberty and 23 justice so richly enjoyed in this nation; and 24 25 Whereas, on December 3, 2011, at the age of 28, Sergeant Ryan D. 26 Sharp gave his life in Landstuhl, Germany, from injuries he 27 sustained on November 21, 2011, in Kandahar Province, 28 Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device (IED) 29 detonated near his dismounted patrol; and 30 31 Whereas, assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor 32 Regiment, 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Riley, Kansas, Sergeant 33 Ryan D. Sharp answered his country’s call and deployed with his 34 company to Afghanistan; and 35 36 Whereas, he left behind two loving daughters, Mia and Sarah 37 Sharp of Warrenville and his devoted parents, Lynnette P. and 38 David R. Sharp of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and 39 40 Whereas, there is no greater or braver sacrifice for a man to make 41 for his country than to lay down his life; therefore, for his valor,

Sharp received the Palmetto Patriot Award from 2 former Lieutenant Governor André Bauer; and 3 4 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is honored to 5 remember the life and sacrifice of a brave son and hero of our 6 nation, Sergeant Ryan D. Sharp. Now, therefore, 7 8 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 9 concurring: 10 11 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 12 resolution, honor and remember the supreme sacrifice made by 13 Sergeant Ryan D. Sharp of the United States Army while he was 14 serving a tour of military duty in Afghanistan, and express to his 15 family the profound appreciation of a grateful State and nation for 16 his life, sacrifice, and service. 17 18 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 19 the family of Sergeant Ryan D.
