TOOLBOX SAFETY TALK & JSA
Bending and Installing Pipe
Best to use this talk with smaller groups to facilitate good discussion to increase their understanding of the hazards and safe work procedures. ______
JOB STEP HAZARD ACTION TAKEN TO CONTOL HAZARD Pre-planning Strains from awkward Coordination with other trades so top layer installed postures prior to mechanicals Use sleeves in slab or concrete walls Pre-assembly on ground at workbench, especially in tight areas Factory elbows preferred to avoid awkward positions Strains from awkward For IMC, use Uni-swivel conduit and elbows, where postures necessary For Rigid, use Erickson unions, where necessary Trip and falls & awkward Set up work area on a flat clean surface postures Handling pipe Hand lacerations on Wear Kevlar gloves pipe edge Pinch hand between Awareness and gloves pipe and rack/support Secure master bundle in stanchions before opening as pipe rolls on strut up while tightening Cut pipe to length Hand lacerations Use portaband or circular zipsaw, preferred Wear kevlar gloves when using hacksaw Cutting and Hand lacerations and Use vise to hold pipe threading pipe strains Secure tripod vise to floor when potential for flipping tripod while using Rigid and IMC Notify foreman of unstable vises in need of repair Cutting and Hand lacerations and Use threading machine (preferred) for large projects Threading large strains Use two people for installing and removing large stock pipe and die for threading pipe Use two people for greater than 3” pipe Reaming pipe Use a file with a good handle Use a ratchet reamer (up to 2”) Bending large Strains from awkward Use Greenlee table bender for large projects pipe postures Always use the adjustable Eggor table with the Eggor bender Watch for pinch points while bending, particularly with Eggor bender Unload/load pipe Strains and pinch points Use two people for setting up large benders bender from gang box and assemble Bending pipe Strains Use cyclone bender or Greenlee 555 (sidewinder) for less than 2 large projects inches Be careful when moving 2 wheel cyclone bender, ask for help when needed When bending with hand bender ( 1-1¼”), use proper body positioning to minimize slipping and falling Use mechanical bender for 1½” or greater Use workbench in lieu of three legged vise

JOB STEP HAZARD ACTION TAKEN TO CONTOL HAZARD Lifting pipe into Strains from over Position body in power zone using appropriate position reaching o Sized ladder Weight- rigid o Scissors lifts
Strains- awkward Plan for enough people to safely lift into place postures Plan ahead for what could happen if drop pipe Selection of people- match size and abilities Connecting & Repetitive motion to Use battery screw gun with correct bit for assembling assembling pipe hands set screw fittings, preferred over screwdriver Consider Kwik Fit EMT with couplings (for 2” and greater) to minimize assembly of couplings Fastening pipe Repetitive motion to Use setting tool with hammer drill for driving in hands Zamacs and nail in anchors Use gas actuated fastening tool (Hilti GX120) or powder actuated tools for strapping Use proper fasteners for the tool and base material, according to manufacturer’s guidelines Use parts tables on lifts to avoid repetitive bending Falls from Stepladders Proper size and ladder setup No leaning off to the side Keep area around ladder clear of debris While descending, careful not to miss bottom step Falls from Scissors lifts Keep feet on floor of lift No climbing on guardrails Replace chain across access opening Tip-over of scissors lifts Protect holes/floor openings
To Summarize Two Key Points:
Position your body in the power zone by using the appropriate size ladder, adjusting the work height of your scissors lifts, and plan your lift of the pipe
Select the proper tool for the job. Preferably use power tools for cutting, bending, threading, reaming, and fastening pipe.
