Isleham Informer Summer Edition • Issue 80 • August 2017 • www.isleham-village.co.uk A great day out at Isleham Gala What a fantastic day we all had at the village Gala on July 1st! It was so lovely to see so many people out and having a fun time with their families. As Chair I would like to thank everyone who helped make the event happen from the commitee who work tirelessly through the year getting everything organised and look- ing great to the lovely helpers who came forward to help out on the day. We are so pleased to have the support of so many resi- dents, local businesses, High Street Church and so many other groups along with the sponsors who help fund the event. All the winners of the races and competi- tions are listed on pages 7, 8 and 9, to all the winners congratulations and to those who took part great effort! We have our AGM at The Beeches on Octo- ber 16th, 7.30pm so please do come along if you would like to help further or give us some new ideas and feedback, we are al- ways open to improving the Gala. Thanks to all those who worked so hard to make it so – an annual event enjoyed by young and old. I love living in Isleham. It is the friendliest place I have ever lived in, and it is full of people giving their time to make it so. The Gala Committee, sports clubs organisers and coaches, leaders of the Brownies, Beavers Cubs and Scouts, parent helpers and Governors at our school, members of the Parish Council, Trustees at The Beeches, and committees of local organisations, all are run by generous people who give their time to make this village the great place it is. Do you have a few hours a week, or a month, to do the same? In this issue is an advert for a School Governor and an appeal from Mark Goldsack for new Trustees at The Beeches; not forgetting that the Informer still needs an editor. There is an old adage that says “You get back what you put in”. Why not give it a try? Whilst some of us spent a peace- ful and interesting half an hour on the Liberty Bell on the River Ouse, another group enjoyed a walk, led by Sheila Taylor, in Pocket Park. Afterwards we all met up at The Cutter for a meal. Thanks to Sheila, Pauline and Margaret who organised the evening. Gala Day, and won 3rd prize! The original building (the old Palace) is a traditional art gallery with some excellent paintings. Across the road (in the former Kings Yard and the Rothschild Yard) is the new section (opened by the HRH The Queen in November 2016) with gift store, refreshments and a lovely central courtyard. - The Kings Yard is believed to be the oldest racing stables in the world. Here we were able to see a former race horse being helped back into normal life in the Peter O’Sullevan Arena, which was very interesting. One of our members, Brian Houghton, was brave enough to try his hand as a jockey, having been given instruction by a former stable head lad.
