Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Symposium Presenters Dr. Sterling Clarren is working with the Northwest Alliance, coordinating the research in FASD for the Western Provinces. He was the Professor of Pediatrics and past Head of the Division of Congenital Defects at the University of Washington School of Medicine and the medical doctor for the University of Washington FAS diagnostic and Prevention Network clinic. Dr. Clarren is currently working from Vancouver’s Children and Sunnyhill Hospital. ‘

Dr. Sandra Bernstein Clarren has worked in the field of special education for over 30 years. After receiving her doctorate from the University of Washington, she worked as a school psychologist in hospital and school settings and at the Fetal alcohol Syndrome diagnostic and Prevention Network at University of Washington. She is a trainer, researcher, presenter, writer and diagnostician in the field of FASD and an educational psychologist in private practice. Sandra is currently at BC Children’s Hospital.

Julie Gelo and her husband, Lynn, are the legal parents to 13 children ranging in age from 6 to 39 and licensed foster parents with Ina Maka, a private foster care agency with United Indians of All Tribes. Eight of Julie’s children have been diagnosed with FASD or related conditions; including all seven who live at home. Julie is the Family Advocate for the Washington FAS Diagnostic and Prevention Network core team at the University of Washington. She is also a foster parent co-trainer with the Resource Family Training Institute with the Department of Social and Health Services. She is the Executive Director for the Washington State Affiliate to the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS) Washington State) and the co- founder of the FASt Friends FASD Community Support Network as well as the annual 5-day FASD Family Summer Camp

Dr. Edward P. Riley received his Ph.D. in 1974 from Tulane University and since 1988 has been a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Director of the Centre for Behavioural Teratology at San Diego State University, San Diego, CA. His major interest is on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on brain and behaviour. He is the author of over 190 scientific papers and reviews and has edited the Handbook of Behavioural Teratology. In 2000 he was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health as Chair of the National Task Force on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects. He currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Steering Committee for the SAMHSA sponsored FAS Centre for Excellence. He has served as the President of the Research Society on Alcohol, the Fetal Alcohol Study Group, and the Behavioural Teratology Society. He is the recipient of the RSA Outstanding Research Aware, the Tharp Award, and the FAS Study Group Award.
