Life History, Population Dynamics and Conservation Status of Oldenburgia Grandis (Asteraceae), an Endemic of the Eastern Cape of South Africa
The conservation, ecology, and distribution of the Critically Endangered Encephalartos latifrons Lehm. A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (SCIENCE) of RHODES UNIVERSITY by CARIN SWART Department of Botany March 2019 ABSTRACT Cycads have attracted global attention both as horticulturally interesting and often valuable plants; but also as some of the most threatened organisms on the planet. In this thesis I investigate the conservation management, biology, reproductive ecology and distribution of Encephalartos latifrons populations in the wild and draw out conclusions on how best to conserve global cycad biodiversity. I also employ computer- modelling techniques in some of the chapters of this thesis to demonstrate how to improve conservation outcomes for E. latifrons and endangered species in general, where information on the distribution, biology and habitat requirements of such species are inherently limited, often precluding robust conservation decision-making. In Chapter 1 of this thesis I introduce the concept of extinction debt and elucidate the importance of in situ cycad conservation. I explain how the concept of extinction debt relates to single species, as well as give details on the mechanisms causing extinction debt in cycad populations. I introduce the six extinction trajectory threshold model and how this relates to extinction debt in cycads. I discuss the vulnerability of cycads to extinction and give an overview of biodiversity policy in South Africa. I expand on how national and global policies contribute to cycad conservation and present various global initiatives that support threatened species conservation. I conclude Chapter 1 by explaining how computer-based models can assist conservation decision-making for rare, threatened, and endangered species in the face of uncertainty. -

MARLER 10 University of Guam, Western Pacific Tropical Research Center, 11 Mangilao, Guam 96923 USA 12 13 Abstract–Several sampling methods were used to survey for potential 14 pollinators of the critically endangered Cycas micronesica in different 15 forest communities on the islands of Guam and Rota. The most common 16 insects found depended on the method. From direct observations, 17 Anatrachyntis sp. (Lepidoptera: Cosmopterygidae) larvae and adults 18 were observed only on male cones. Adult Carpophilus sp. beetles 19 (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) were common on male cones and were 20 occasionally observed on female cones. In bag traps over cones, adult 21 Anatrachyntis were consistently trapped and were very abundant on 22 both sexes, and other insects were rarely observed. Sticky collars around 23 cones captured the highest diversity of taxa, mostly Diptera, Hymen- 24 optera and Coleoptera comprising several families within each order, as 25 well as Anatrachyntis adults. Two species within the family Phoridae 26 were the most common Diptera and ants were the most common 27 Hymenoptera. The most common Coleoptera were Staphylinidae and 28 Nitidulidae. Similar taxa were trapped on both sexes and from four 29 different habitats on Guam. -

Methods We investigated relationships within subsection Rumphiae of the genus Cycas by analysing 18 variable (11 informative) morphological characters and 22 allozyme loci for seven of the 10 species currently assigned to this taxon. Results Distinctive morphological characters are few and fail to resolve relationships within the group. Allozyme data show that species within this subsection are closely related and suggest that there are two groups within the subsection, one comprising Cycas thouarsii (East Africa) and C. -

Abstract Cycas seemannii (Cycadaceae) is a widespread and highly variable species. This study investigates morphological variability and ethnobotanical uses throughout the entire range (Torres Strait Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga) of the species. The morphological characters studied are highly variable among populations and unrelated to genetic differences. Characters are also more variable than previously assumed and because of this we provide an updated, detailed taxonomic description of Cycas seemannii based on extensive morphometric data, fieldwork and herbarium specimens. The plant is of great cultural importance in Vanuatu, its seeds are utilised as a source of starch and it is a widely cultivated ornamental. Possible consequences of the plant’s decreasing cultural importance are discussed. Introduction Many plants respond to differences in environmental parameters, such as light, temperature, nutrients and moisture, by producing leaves of different morphology (Chabot and Chabot, 1977; Sultan and Bazzaz, 1993a, 1993b). For example, it has been found that many plants produce sun and shade leaves that differ in several morphological and anatomical features (Jackson, 1967; Smith and Nobel, 1977, 1978). This phenomenon of environmentally introduced phenotypic variation is known as phenotypic plasticity (Stearns, 1989), thought to be a mean of absorbing stress (Bradshaw and Hardwick, 1989). -

Conclusion Abstract We present the first-ever worldwide compilation of traditional cycad names and discuss the significance of our findings. Using all available cycad literature and much personal consultation, we have compiled a table of scientific names, localities, languages, vernacular names and, where known, translations into English. We have uncovered at least one vernacular name for 145 of the 302 presently- known cycad species and a total of 494 vernacular names in 128 languages. Patterns of meaning revealed in our compendium include cycad-palm and cycad-fern homologies, a strong maize analogy (in Mesoamerican countries), toponymic references, allusions to morphological features, non-Western binomial taxonomies, references to local folklore, and references to economic uses of cycad products. Averyanov Summary: Cycas hoabinhensis is a typical local paleoendemic with a strictly limited distribution in the central part of northern Vietnam It g grows in evergreen, broad-leaved lowland limestone forests at elevations of 70 –250 m a.s.l. and is usually associated with about 130 native species of vascular plants (110 genera and 47 families). Three of them were reported as new species for science and four as new records for the flora of Vietnam. The morphological variation of C. hoabinhensis has been studied in a series of individuals from different subpopulations. Updated global conservation status of C. hoabinhensis is assessed as Endangered A2cd; B1ab (ii, iv, v). The significant information of pollination, seed dispersal, climatic and edaphic elements and threats to the existence of this stenoendemic cycad are provided here for the first time.
