1 Locate and Use Facts from Multiple Sources
Writer’s Workshop Daily Plan
1. Mini-Lesson Focus: ELACC.1.RI – Reading for Information, ELACC.1.W.2, W7, W8 The purpose of this lesson is to help students gather words to use in informational writing.
Locate and Use Facts from Multiple Sources: Prior to lesson select several informational texts on the same topic. The topic should be something that you want students to use as they begin to write informational reports (tie to Social Studies and Science topics if possible). Make sure you have previewed the book so you know which facts you want to gather as you read from different sources. Call students over to the meeting area. “Writers of nonfiction need to use lots of sources for their information. I have these books all on the same topic. My goal is to get information from each of them so that I can use that in my writing. I am going to start thinking about ______.” Think aloud as you read from the texts about what information you want to gather. Use a graphic organizer (see example below) to help you keep track of your thinking. Model for students how you can use the graphic organizer to turn it into an informational piece. Have students work with partner or collaborative group to gather information on graphic organizer. This lesson may be continued tomorrow by having students actually use their graphic organizer to write a brief report. Students could work with partners writing on large chart paper and then present their report. By attaching the graphic organizer directly on their writing, it will reinforce using the graphic organizer to gather and write.

For Less Experienced Writers: In a small group, guide writers as they skim and scan the visuals to locate facts on a single focus point. Coach and assist as they take notes- sketching, labeling, and writing phrases. For More Experienced Writers: Establish the expectation that writers use multiple sources and have students learn to keep a list of the sources they used in each piece of writing. Have writers save their pages of notes that were gathered from multiple sources (sketches, labels, and phrases) and display them next to their finished writing.
