DISSERTATION Disabling Genre: Representations of Autism in Children’s and Young Adult Literature

Telling stories from the perspective of a person with intellectual disability presents unique challenges to the author, particularly in terms of framing and sign-posting. The author must decide to what degree they will favor their protagonists’ unique way of seeing the world versus their neurotypical readers’ desire for a recognizable narrative structure. Oftentimes, this issue is circumvented through the use of genre fiction, which promises a recognizable plot structure with a confirmed resolution. The choice of genre is particularly interesting in this study since popular choices such as detective fiction can and do empower children with autism, but can also limit their autonomy as narrators in unexpected ways. In addition to exploring the intersection of genre and disability from a literary perspective, this project also proposes to incorporate the viewpoint of children as readers, as well as their instructors, in order to present a balanced view of disability literature and its uses and limitations in the classroom.
