Purpose: To become familiar with using the microscope and creating dry and wet mount slides.
Materials: Microscope, slides, cover slips, strand of your hair, onion tissue, cheek cells, and stain.
Procedure:
Hair: Place a strand of your hair on a slide. Place a cover slip over the hair and place the slide on the stage of your scope. Draw and label what you see.

Onion Cell: Obtain a small piece of onion tissue using tweezers. This tissue is found between layers of onion. Place this thin tissue on a clean slide, add a drop of stain, and place cover slip on top at a 45 degree angle. WIPE OFF EXTRA STAIN! WASH YOUR SLIDE AND COVERSLIP IN YOUR SINK, DRY WITH PAPER TOWELS.

Cheek Cell: Use a clean toothpick to gently scrape the inside of your cheek to get cheek cells. Place them on your clean slide and place one drop of stain on them. Carefully place the cover slip on top of the cells/stain. Wipe off any excess stain.
