LASC Behavioral & Social Science Department Meeting Minutes

IV. Welcome Dr. Howard

V. Agenda Items LASC Health Center – Suzanne Coleman, MSW Intern gave a presentation on the mental health services that are available to students, in the Health Center. Students may utilize walk-in services for their initial consultation. And proceeding visits must be by appointment. Ms. Coleman left flyers for the department and also offered to do presentations in individual classes.

Introduction of New Instructors – Dr. Howard introduced the new instructors in the department. Anthropology has two new instructors, Prof. Javier Barajas Espinoza and Prof. Sonja Ulrich. Prof. Emily McKnight. Professors McKnight and Ulrich are both former LASC students.

FTLA Best Practices – Over the winter break, Dr. Marini Smith, Dr. Jamie Miller and Prof. Denice Bartels (art) attended the LACCD Faculty Teaching and Learning Academy (FTLA). The group brought back highlights; they received from the training, such as: Syllabus Revision, Teaching Philosophy Revision, Reading Apprenticeship Routines- i.e., reading history/ or first reading experience remembered, First Day Lesson Plan, Peer Observations and websites www.weebly.com and www.edted.com .

New Classes

 African American Studies 2 -The African American in Contemporary Society

 African American Studies 7- Black Americans and the Political System

 Administration of Justice 49 – Narcotics and Vice Control

 Administration of Justice 180 – Introduction to Forensics

 Anthropology 132 – Native People of North America

 Asian American Studies 001- The Asian American in the History of the United States

 Chicano Studies 002 – The Mexican American in Contemporary Society

 Chicano Studies 007 – Introduction to Chicana/o Studies

These classes are part of the new pathways the department plans to offer a AA in Ethnic Studies and Certificate of Achievement in Forensics, Evidence and Investigation (CTE). Dr. Howard would like the department to review new degree content and give input. Dr. Cunin suggested that we expand anthropology to include an Asian concentrated class. Dr. Fontaine and Prof. Saafir are interested in offering a Forensic Psychology Certificate. Prof. Barlow is interested in offering a Certificate of Achievement in Corrections. Classes that need Department Approval – the following classes need to be approved by the department so that they can be sent to curriculum

Outdated COR (2010) – The following classes have outdated COR and need to be reviewed and updated by each individual discipline

ADT Revisions – the following courses were reviewed to ensure that they have met ADT criteria. The courses were found to have met the changes suggested for C-ID approval. The department sought more clarification from the articulation officer and/or administration, however neither could be present for the meeting.

Department reviewed suggested C-ID changes for the classes listed below and gave their approval for the suggested C-ID changes to be made. Notice was sent to the Dean and the Articulation Officer.

Instructor Events – Prof. Powell’s event for Black History Month had a great turnout. The event focused on events in black history that effect decisions we make today and Black Lives Matter.

VI. Questions/Comments Dr. Howard reminded faculty to turn in the SLO assessments from Fall 2014 semester, and to ensure they complete their census and exclusion rosters through the district portal. VI. Adjournment Dr. Howard 3:00pm
