What is the purpose for reading this text? A clearly articulated purpose focuses instruction, provides students with an answer to “why do we have to do this?” and allows for assessment outcomes. Learning Goal:

Students will describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Essential Question:

How can I use character actions, thoughts, and dialogue to determine the traits of a character?

Begin with the End in Mind: Final Task: This could be something done in writing or through a structured discussion. The idea is for students to practice the skills needed to produce the text type quality desired.

In your opinion, what kind of a character is Destiny? Include at least three character traits and use text evidence to support your reasoning.

Answer: Destiny is a good person. She is…  Caring (she made a special gift for Mrs. Ward)  Determined (she did not give up/she tried many ways to solve the problem)  Learner (loves to read, learn, and record words)  Likes routine (goes to the store every Tuesday and Saturday)  Helpful (helps do work at the store and helped at Mrs. Ward’s table at the block party) Teacher Instructions

Before Teaching 1. Read entire main selection text, keeping in mind the Big Ideas and Key Understandings. 2. Re-read the main selection text while noting the stopping points for the Text Dependent Questions and teaching Vocabulary. During Teaching 1. Students read the entire main selection text independently (or a portion of the text). 2. Teacher reads the main selection text (or a portion of the text) aloud with students following along. (Depending on how complex the text is and the amount of support needed by students, the teacher may choose to reverse the order of steps 1 and 2.) 3. Students and teacher re-read the text while stopping to respond to and discuss the questions and returning to the text.
