(20) Liked the sack race. (21) I was her partner. (22) We did well in all of the practices conducted in gym. (23) We seemed to get better and better each time the teachers led one of the practices. (24) When the whistle blew to start the race on field day, we both tripped and fell. (25) After managing to pull ourselves up, Jacqueline and I finished in second place. (26) This was not bad because we were sprawled out all over our lane at the start. (27) Classes moved smoothly from event to event. (28) Breaks, snack time, and lunch were all included in the schedule. (29) No one got hurt or lost. (30) Many of the parents commented on how tired they were at the end of the day. Thursday, February 26 Zach is in the fourth grade. His teacher asked each student to write a report about an animal. Zach wrote about the armadillo. This is a draft of his paper. Zach wants help to revise and edit the paper. Read Zach’s paper and think about changes you would make to help him improve it. Then answer the questions that follow. The Armadillo

(1) A cricket silently rests under a deep pile of rotting leaves. (2) All of a sudden, a sticky wet tongue appears out of nowhere. (3) It flicks quickly through the leaves and latches onto the surprised cricket. (4) Within the blink of an eye, the cricket disappears down the throat of a dark brown, four- legged creature. (5) An armadillo has found an evening snack. (6) Armadillos are animals. (7) There are several kinds of armadillos. (10) This skin makes it difficult for other animals to penetrate the body and harm the armadillo. (11) The armadillo’s underside and the tip of its nose are not protected by the tough skin. (12) These tender spots are exposed to any and all enemies. (13) The shoulder area of the armadillo is covered by large secsions of skin. (14) The area along the armadillo’s legs near the tail is also covered with these tough sections or bands of skin. (15) The bands cover the middle part of the armadillo’s back. (16) They are connected with muscles to help the armadillo move. (17) Some armadillos can have as many as eleven bands. (18) A long tail extends out the backside of an armadillo. (19) It too is covered by tough skin. (20) Sometimes, an armadillo uses its tail to keep its balance when standing on its two back foots. (21) When an armadillo is in danger, it may roll up into a ball showing an enemy only its tough outside skin. (22) Another armadillo may leap straight into the air. (23) It can jump up to two feet high. (24) When the armadillo lands back on the ground, it takes off in a quick run. (25) If an armadillo is unable to run away from an enemy, it will stop and dig a hole. (26) The armadillo can scoop out a hole large enough to protect itself in just a few minutes. (27) Armadillos eat insects, worms, spiders, scorpions, small snakes, lizards, berries, and roots. (28) The armadillo gobles down any food it finds. (29) Its long, wet tongue latches onto the insects or other small creatures and pulls them into its mouth. (30) The tongue is also used to help break up the food in the armadillo’s mouth before it is swallowed. (31) Armadillos spend most of their time living alone. (32) And looking for food. (33) They live in holes in the ground called burrows. (34) An individual armadillo may make as many as five burrows. (35) One burrow serves as the home. (36) The other burrows are used to hide away from enemies. (37) Usually, armadillos stay home in their holes during the day. (38) As it turns dark, the armadillos come out of their burrows and go look for food. (39) When the weather turns colder, armadillos make a switch. (40) They come out during the day and stay inside of their burrows at night. (41) This helps keep them protected from the cold temperatures. (42) Baby armadillos are usually born in the first two to five months of the year. (43) A armadillo often gives birth to four babies at a time. (44) Each one is exactly the same as the others. (45) Baby armadillos are up and walking around just a few hours after birth. (46) They scramble to get their mother’s milk. (47) After several months of living with their mother, the young armadillos will leave to go and live on their own. (48) Armadillos live all across the southern parts of the United States. (49) They do have to be careful around people, but it looks like they are here to stay.
