Course Objectives:

2 week rotation: o Understand the role of the pediatrician in the prevention of developmental and behavioral problems in children. o Learn the prenatal influences and postnatal influences, and the common environmental, social and family influences that can disrupt optimal development and behavior of a child o Develop a working knowledge of typical development and behavior for children and families and apply this knowledge in the clinical setting to differentiate normal from abnormal states o Develop a working knowledge of common developmental and behavioral disorders including autism, ADHD, language and motor disorders, and intellectual disability o Learn how to counsel parents about typical parenting issues (related to child development, behavior, health and safety, family adjustment).

4 week rotation (in addition to the above objectives): o Observe psychological and medical developmental evaluation process and participate in team meetings to discuss the findings and plan management approaches o Demonstrate ability to administer and interpret developmental screening tools

Course Description: This 2 or 4-week medical student rotation in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics will provide an introduction to this subspecialty that focuses on the development of young children and the biological and environmental factors that can influence behavior and development. The student will observe the evaluation and management of children with developmental and behavioral concerns in an outpatient clinical setting and will have the opportunity to interact with members of the multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, psychologists, nurse practitioners, social workers and nurses. There will also be opportunity to learn about the outreach efforts and collaborative projects with community agencies that are focused on promoting healthy child development.
