Match background

Having won their only previous tie against Russian opposition, RC Celta de Vigo will go into their UEFA Cup Round of 32 game against FC Spartak Moskva with confidence.

• Spartak qualified for the Round of 32 as the third-placed side in UEFA Champions League Group B. Celta finished second in UEFA Cup Group H.

• The two sides have never met in European competition.

• Spartak have been drawn against Spanish opposition seven times in European competition (winning three and losing four) and also faced Primera División sides in the UEFA Champions League group stage on four previous occasions.

• In total, their record of individual games against Spanish opposition reads won seven, drawn five and lost ten.

• Celta have been drawn against Russian opposition just once, beating FC Zenit St. Petersburg 4-3 in a 2000 UEFA Intertoto Cup final. They drew 2-2 in Russia and then won 2-1 at home to earn a UEFA Cup place.

• Romanian international team-mates could be on opposite sides in the match, with Gabriel Tamas representing Celta and Adrian Iencsi playing for Spartak. Defender Tamas previously played for Spartak, making 17 league appearances for the club in the 2004 and 2006 seasons.

• Russian players have proved to be a success at Celta in the past. Former Spartak stars and Aleksandr Mostovoi were key players at Celta during the 1990s. Karpin spent five seasons at the club while Mostovoi was there for eight seasons, earning the nickname 'Tzar' among local fans.

• Spartak coach Vladimir Fedotov has limited experience of Spanish opposition having twice played against Spain for the Soviet Union in 1972 UEFA European Championship qualifiers. He was a late substitute as his side won 2-1 at home and played for 83 minutes in the goalless draw in Spain.

• The second leg of the tie will be played on 22 February. The aggregate winners will face Werder Bremen or AFC Ajax in the Round of 16, playing the home leg on 8 March and the away second leg a week later.

RC Celta de Vigo

UEFA club competition milestones • Celta featured in three consecutive UEFA Cup quarter-finals from the 1998/99 season but were narrowly defeated on aggregate by Olympique de Marseille (1-2), RC Lens (1-2) and FC Barcelona (4-4, lost on away goals) respectively. Against Marseille, Celta were on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat in the opening leg in France with goals from Florian Maurice (34 and 67 minutes) sandwiched by a goal for the Spanish side by Aleksandr Mostovoi (64). However, the return leg at the Balaídos ended goalless and Celta bowed out.

Lausanne-Sports, Aris Thessaloniki FC, SL Benfica and Juventus were all defeated in the 1999/2000 competition before Celta succumbed to Lens in the last eight. Again failing to find the net at home, Celta took the lead in the return through Haim Revivo (56), only for Lens to hit back through Valérian Ismaël (67) and Pascal Nouma (72).

Their tie against Barcelona marked their 15th and 16th games in UEFA club competition during the 2000/01 season after Celta had qualified for the UEFA Cup by being one of the winning clubs involved in that season's UEFA Intertoto Cup. In the UEFA Cup, Celta defeated HNK Rijeka, FK Crvena Zvezda, FC Shakhtar Donetsk and VfB Stuttgart before losing out to Barça. The first leg ended in a 2-1 defeat at the Camp Nou, and though Mostovoi's last-minute goal helped Celta to a 3-2 win in the return, they lost on the away-goals rule.

• The Spanish club advanced to the knockout stages of the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League before losing to Arsenal FC, their last appearance in UEFA club competition prior to this season. Having overcome SK Slavia Praha (aggregate: 3-2) in the third qualifying round, Celta recorded two victories (at home to AFC Ajax and away to AC Milan) and three draws (at home to Milan and in both matches against Club Brugge KV) in the group stage to book their place in the knockout stage. However, Arsenal won both legs of their first knockout round tie to advance as 5-2 aggregate winners.

UEFA club competition honours • UEFA Intertoto Cup: 2000

Ten-year record (including current season) • This is Celta's sixth UEFA Cup campaign in the past decade and their first involvement in the competition since the 2002/03 campaign.

• The Spanish club defeated R. Standard de Liège home and away en route to recording a 4-0 aggregate success in the first round of this season's UEFA Cup to advance to the group stage. From their four-match programme, Celta recorded one victory and two draws to finish second in their group, five points adrift of Newcastle United FC. They started and ended their campaign with 1-1 draws at home to Eintracht Frankfurt and away to US Città di Palermo, while they overcame their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle to defeat Fenerbahçe SK 1-0 at the Balaídos thanks to Fabián Canobbio's goal 13 minutes from time. With victories at a premium in the group overall, Celta were able to finish one point clear of both Fenerbahçe and Palermo with Eintracht a further point adrift in fifth.
