PRE-COLLEGIATE TIP-SHEET FOR COLLEGE IN COLORADO

Thank you for your commitment to effective mentoring: nothing is more important than helping Colorado’s young people prepare for productive lives! We would like to offer you some resources to encourage your Students and “Mentees” to think seriously about the steps they need to take to prepare for Careers and College. 90% of the family wage jobs of the 21st century will require some post-secondary training, whether a Certificate, Associates or Bachelors degree. Aspects of Career and College Prep with which we hope to make you familiar include:

Parents/Mentors shall be prepared to address issues of College Access and Career Preparation

 Parents/Mentors will be familiar with key steps towards successful HS graduation or GED acquisition and entry into the workforce or post-secondary study.  Parents/Mentors will understand the Colorado Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness standards and Higher Education Admission Requirements  Parents/Mentors will be familiar with aspects of Financial Aid and the cost of post-secondary study in Colorado - the College Opportunity Fund, Daniels Fund Scholarships, FAFSA etc.  Parents/Mentors will be familiar with the www.collegeincolorado.org career and college guidance system  Parents/Mentors will know how to connect students with internship and job opportunities  Parents/Mentors will be familiar with the College Application process  Parents/Mentors will be familiar with issues related to the ACT, Accuplacer and Remediation  Parents/Mentors will understand how ASCENT, dual credit and concurrent enrollment works
