ABOUT KENT & LORI HERBEL

Kent and Lori have been raising and training dogs since 1979. Their emphasis is on producing a quality stockdog for ranch or trial work. They work with all herding breeds on their training facility in western Oklahoma.

The Herbels began training dogs in 1979, specializing in training Labrador Retrievers as gundogs. Their first stockdog was purchased in the mid-80’s, and gradually the switch was made to training herding dogs. They got into competitive herding trials in 1989, and served as the Trial Chairman and Trial Secretary of the very first AKC herding trials. Kent served on the 1991 and 1994 AKC National Herding Advisory Committees, and he and Lori are both AKC approved herding test/trial judges. Kent has also judged USBCHA trials. Lori has served as the editor of the AKC “Herdsman” since 1991. She is a freelance writer and photographer, with her working appearing in many venues including “Dog News”, “Ranch Dog Trainer”, “Dogs in Review”, as well as numerous other magazines and books.

More recently Kent was the trainer and handler of High in Trial in 2002 at the Australian Cattle Dog Nationals, Border Collie Nationals, and German Shepherd Nationals, and in the past has also won top honors at the Briard Nationals. He has trained and trialed successfully in AKC at least 5 dogs to their Championship level with more coming close behind, as well as having trained successful Open levels of dogs in the USBCHA.

Kent is well known for his ability to read and understand dogs and handlers as well as livestock, and is a great communicator as well as educator. He has worked with, and has an appreciation for, all of the herding breeds.

Kent and Lori travel approximately 60,000 miles per year competing, judging, instinct testing and instructing at clinics throughout the U.S. In 2001, they owned and handled four of the top ten Advanced AKC Border Collies, based on dogs defeated.

The XP Ranch is currently home to 7 adult Border Collies, and 6 year-old BC pups from their last litter, which will be trained and trialed, or sold as trained dogs. The Herbels also own an Australian Cattle dog, a German Shepherd (first GSD conformation champion to earn an advanced herding title) and a Miniature Pinscher.
