RADIOLOGY REPORTS.

All Reports for routine plain investigations are sent directly to the referring GP. In cases where the report suggests urgent attention – the GP will be contacted immediately the report is available. This may be via a faxed report or where necessary a direct telephone call. A Red Flag/Star system is also in operation to highlight reports which give an unexpected abnormal finding. Should an urgent report (same day) be requested the referring GP (or one of their staff) should contact the Radiology Department on the telephone numbers above. The Radiology reception staff will liaise with the relevant superintendent radiographer who will ensure the Chest X-ray is reported and the report faxed back to the surgery within 24 hours. (We will endeavour wherever possible to do this the same working day).

All other Radiology reports would be expected to be with the Referrer within 10 working Days of the Radiographic examination.

GENERAL REFERRAL GUIDELINES 1. The Radiology Request Form should be completed fully, giving full clinical details for the request and a provisional diagnosis. It is useful if the clinical information includes details of previous surgery or other medical factors which could affect the scheduling or outcome of the investigation. 2. Where possible a contact telephone number should be given for the patient to enable the radiology Department to contact them at short notice where appropriate. 3. It is important that the referring General Practitioner is clearly identified to ensure reports are returned in the minimum time. The practice telephone or fax number should be included so the Radiologist can contact the General Practitioner to discuss particular cases. 4. An indication of previous radiological investigations should be made. This should eliminate unnecessary irradiations. 5. Details of possible pregnancy in women of child bearing age – including the date of LMP should be entered on the Request Form. 6. It is the referring clinicians responsibility to inform the Department if the patients has any relevant medical conditions or disabilities, e.g. Diabetic, Blindness, etc. 7. If in doubt as to whether an investigations is required, or which investigation is best, a Consultant Radiologist will be available to discuss the case with you. It is acceptable to give details of the clinical problem and to leave the decision as to the appropriate investigation up to the Radiologist. Departmental Contact Details
