APPLICATION PROCEDURE

2017 CLOSING DATE FOR DEPARTMENTAL APPLICATION IS 30 SEPTEMBER 2016

1. Before applying, refer to the UP General Regulations, Faculty Economic and Management Sciences regulations and Departmental admission requirements as published in the respective yearbooks all available online on the UP website.

2. Current registered UP students do not need to apply for re-admittance to the UP campus but have to apply on-line via your UP student portal.

3. UP alumni who interrupted their studies, need to apply for re-admittance to the UP campus.

4. UP alumni and other prospective applicants: Apply on-line for admittance to the University of Pretoria (UP) via the UP website.

5. After receiving an official UP reference number, complete the Departmental application form and email with all the supporting documentation to [email protected].

Application form with the supporting documentation may be submitted in hard copy to Department Human Resource Management, Economic and Management Sciences Building, Level 3. Mark clearly: For attention Postgraduate Administration Office.

6. Your application will not be considered without the UP reference number

7. Applicants outside South Africa or abroad should comply with all UP entry requirements before starting the application process. Familiarise yourself with South African visa requirements and study permits too. Access the webpages of the UP international office for more information about the UP application process and closing dates for application: http://www.up.ac.za/international- students

8. Attach the following documents to your Departmental application form

8.1 Cover letter with motivation why do you apply for the academic programme 8.2 Full academic record/transcripts with results (add explanation of grading system/grading codes of the respective tertiary institutions where you completed your previous degrees) 8.3 Copy of Identity document/ passport 8.4 Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae 8.5 A research proposal limited to 10 pages (see the briefing in the departmental application form)

9. Applicants should adhere to all the requirements for selection before the selection panel convenes in November. Applicants NOT complying with all stated prerequisites will NOT be considered for selection.

Page 7 of 8 SUBMIT A TEN (10) PAGE RESEARCH PROPOSAL WITH THIS DEPARTMENTAL APPLICATION

For the purpose of this application, please write a short research proposal using a (preliminary) research topic that you are interested in to use for your thesis. The proposal should include the following:

 The research question  Background to the question  The purpose of the research  The method of investigation, including: o What approach will be applicable: Qualitative or quantitative research? o What research design will be appropriate? o What method of data collection will you use? o What method of analysis will you use?  Ethics involved in the study

The criteria of evaluation is grounded in the following 4 points:

1. Structure and integration: The ability of the candidate to structure the proposal logically. This includes:  Contextualising the proposed study in a properly written introduction/background.

 Logically structuring the sequence of the proposal.

 Creating links between sentences, paragraphs and sections to create a coherent whole

2. Practicality of the study and theoretical application: The ability of the candidate to apply research methodology theory to a practical problem. That is, the potential of the problem to be investigated in practice. It also implies that the methodology proposed by the student is able to answer the research question and be executable in practice and offers one of the best solutions in answering the research question.

3. Knowledge of research methodology: The level of knowledge of research methodology displayed by the candidate. The explanations of the methodology should be correct and comprehensive.

4. Technical care and presentation: The application of academic writing principles (including the use of a proper referencing system such as the APA or Harvard short hand) as well as the ability to properly apply the general principles of English written language (i.e. grammatical and spelling rules).
