SPRING 2016 RED HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL
Marvellous Me Welcome back, we hope you had a lovely Christmas break. The first half of this term we will be learning all about Marvellous Me! This is a topic driven by Art and Science. Our Art focus will be on self-portraits including painting, sketching and silhouettes while in Science we shall study the human body including the digestive system, how the ear works and revision on teeth from year three. We will also study sound and sound waves.
In Mathematics we shall continue to teach the new National Curriculum including the four operations, problem solving, one and two step word problems and addition and subtraction of fractions (it is easier than it sounds!) Please continue to practise the multiplication times tables up to 12x12 and their associated division facts.
In Music we will create our own music based on a variety of composers through the ages, ending the sessions with a final performance.
Our PSHE focus is a unit called “Why do you judge me?” based on different forms of discrimination, why it is wrong and how it can be challenged. In performance poetry we will study various poems including “I’m Walking my Iguana” by Brian Moses and various Roald Dahl poems from his book Revolting Rhymes. These will be used as a basis for writing our own poems. Invaders and Settlers The main focus after half term is the Anglo Saxons. We will study how they lived and how they ruled England for around 500 years. We will look at Round Houses and have the chance to build our own at Forest School. A letter will follow soon with further details of Forest School. We shall also study Alfred The Great, the only King of England to be called Great.

In English we will read the popular book, The Spiderwick Chronicles. We shall look at how the story is constructed and use these ideas to help us plan, write and edit our own following our Talk 4 Writing Project. The main focus will be complex sentence structures and use of good quality vocabulary.
