J. POWELL SMITH UPON THE 12 OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HIM FOR 13 HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE 14 WITH THE CLEMSON COOPERATIVE EXTENSION, AND 15 TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE 16 ENDEAVORS. 17 18 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 19 Representatives are pleased to recognize Dr. J. Powell Smith, upon 20 the occasion of his retirement, for his significant contributions to 21 the State of South Carolina’s agricultural industry; and 22 23 Whereas, Dr. J. Powell Smith graduated from the University of 24 Georgia with a bachelor of science in agriculture in 1979 and with 25 a master’s degree in plant protection and pest management in 26 1984. In 2013, he received a doctor of philosophy in entomology 27 from Clemson University; and 28 29 Whereas, a recognized leader among his peers throughout the 30 Southeast, Dr. Smith has worked for the Clemson Cooperative 31 Extension as a field agent, state vegetable researcher, and state 32 lead vegetable agent since 1995. During his time with the 33 extension, he has worked with vegetable and small fruit producers 34 to help them develop and implement new technologies, production 35 practices, postproduction handling improvements, foodsafety 36 processes, pestmanagement practices, and other aspects of 37 production; and 38 39 Whereas, Dr. Smith has led and assisted many research projects at 40 local, state, and national levels to solve production problems in the 41 fresh vegetable industry in South Carolina and the Southeast. 42 Much of his research has resulted in higherquality crops with
[4819] 2 1 fewer inputs, and many of his projects have led to onfarm 2 demonstrations benefiting South Carolina producers; and 3 4 Whereas, Dr. Smith is active in the South Carolina Entomological 5 Society, the South Carolina Association of County Agricultural 6 Agents, the Entomology Society of America, and the American 7 Phytopathological Society. He is also a certified crop advisor with 8 the American Society of Agronomy; and 9 10 Whereas, a highly respected innovator in the South Carolina fruit 11 and vegetable industry, Dr. Smith enjoys helping solve grower 12 problems, mentoring younger professionals, and learning new 13 things; and 14 15 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 16 Representatives are grateful for the dedication and commitment 17 that J. Powell Smith has shown in serving the people and the State 18 of South Carolina. Now, therefore, 19 20 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 21 22 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 23 by this resolution, congratulate Dr. J. Powell Smith upon the 24 occasion of his retirement, commend him for his many years of 25 outstanding public service with the Clemson Cooperative 26 Extension, and wish him continued success in all his future 27 endeavors. 28 29 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 30 Dr. J.
