Art Horse Magazine Writer’s Guidelines

Note--DO NOT include the entire actual story that you are proposing when you contact Art Horse. How to submit an idea: 1: Tell us your story idea in a query letter for a specific feature. Your letter itself should be one page or less in length. Explain the idea for the piece in this letter and tell us how you would approach it as a writer, how the piece would be illustrated, and how you would make the story interesting to our readers. Also include an approximate number of sources in your bibliography. 2: Include some short recent writing samples (1-4 pp) that will give a sense of your writing style. If you wish you may include a *short* excerpt of the piece but DO NOT include the entire actual story that you are proposing. 3: Include your credentials (i.e. years experience with subject, college degrees, etc.) in your query letter. 4: Most stories are either 2000 word short articles or larger ones of 3000-5000 words. Story ideas should fit into the framework of the subjects we explore, meaning that your story should be coming from an Equine-themed historical perspective in some way. Academic-style, intellectually stimulating articles are best. If you have not seen Art Horse, please browse the magazine before you send a submission to see what we actually publish.

We will consider: Historical articles, Ancient Equine history, Artist biographies (up to 19th century)

We do not need: Fiction, artist self-articles, Art Show reports, equine event reports, ‘docu-tisements’, how-to articles, book reviews, or articles with subjects we have already covered in a recent issue

5: Having images included with your story will vastly increase the odds of success with us. When submitting, these images can be low-res internet sized images, but Please Note that for publication these images must be *high-quality work* both artistically (as in eye-appeal) and technically (as in print-readiness). At time of publication, all images will need to be properly formatted, high-resolution files, and it is to your benefit to understand why we have these requirements for images and what they mean. In addition, all images must have proper permission included by the artist, copyright holder, institution, or photographer. 6: A submission that is well-researched is a must. If your article is published, you will need to list your sources in endnote form. 7: Please use MSWord format all submissions. 8: Please note that Art Horse does not issue press passes to major equine events for submission pieces.

Art Horse Magazine discourages the submission of entire unsolicited manuscripts and assumes no responsibility for their return. Rate of Payment Art Horse Magazine will pay a flat rate on publication (compatible to article size). Kill fee of 25% will be paid for assigned flat-rate articles that are cancelled at or before publication, upon return of said article to writer. Address all query letters to: Lyne Raff, Editor, Art Horse Magazine, P.O. Box 13017 Beaumont, TX 77726-3017 USA [email protected]
