Important: No Erasmus students will be admitted at the Department of Translators without previous nomination by de International Office of their home university. The application form will be sent by e-mail to the nominee. Students wishing to start in the first term (autumn) should submit their application form by June 15th. The deadline for applications for the second term (spring semester) is November 15th.

Students without any knowledge of the Dutch language are strongly advised to participate in the Dutch language course, organised previous to the start of the academic year (normally during the first and second week of September). No Dutch language course will be organised for students arriving in the second term.

The city of Antwerp (Antwerpen, Anvers)

Antwerp, a city with about half a million inhabitants, is of major importance to economic and cultural life in Flanders. Not only is it a centre of historical importance, in this modern day and age it is a centre of industrial and commercial activities. The rich cultural heritage of Antwerp can be experienced through a number of famous monuments, as well as museums, art galleries and other venues. The city has a very diversified offer of social, cultural and leisure events. Theatres, cinemas, pubs, bookstores, parks, etc. cater for everyone’s tastes and needs. Artesis University College Antwerp

The University College Antwerp is one of the leading schools in Flanders, offering education in a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from architecture to drama, music and dance and from engineering to social work. Currently 6500 students are studying at the University College Antwerp in 7 departments. Most of these departments are located in the city centre.

The University College Antwerp, is part of the Association of the Universities and University Colleges of Antwerp. This means that all our students have free access to the universities’ library network, can take part in joint research programmes, benefit from teacher mobility programmes and can enrol for any course taught at the University of Antwerp.

Department of Translators and Interpreters

2 Students of translation and interpreting receive a thorough language training, which guarantees their excellent command of Dutch and two or three foreign languages. In addition, they are also taught the ins and outs of translation and interpreting, and are expected to complete a substantial number of technical, socio-cultural and economic courses successfully. These provide the students with the background that is indispensable for anyone wishing to operate as a cultural mediator.

The Department of Translators and Interpreters is a member of the European Language Council, CIUTI, the Conférence Internationale et Permanente d’Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et d’Interprètes. It is also one of the few European translation institutes offering a master’s degree in conference interpreting (into Dutch). The master’s programme was set up in October 1998 under the auspices of the European Commission.

The staff’s academic record, the numerous professional contacts that they have with other universities and institutes of higher education abroad, and the Institute’s privileged relations with the major international professional organizations in the field guarantee the quality and high standard of its curriculum and training.

To conclude, studying at the Department for Translators and Interpreters means work, but there is also time to relax and the institute offers a student-friendly environment in which to do so. The easy-going contacts between the Board, teachers and students form part of the Department’s tradition, and the student union ensures a choice of extra-curricular socio-cultural activities to everyone’s liking.

Teaching and learning

A large number of teaching and learning methods is used to transfer knowledge and skills from the lecturer to the student. These include lectures, lectures with the possibility for discussion, group seminars, exercises with group monitoring and study visits. Course structure

Degree of Bachelor in Applied Language Studies: 180 credits (three years of study)

Degree of Master of Translation / Degree of Master of Interpreting: 60 credits (one year of study)

3 Linguistic Competence

Assessment

The following forms of assessment are used to assess the students’ progress in their work: written exams, oral exams, project work (individual or group), exercises, reports, presentations, continuous assessment.

Local grading scale

The grading scale used at the Higher Institute for Translators and Interpreters is based on the marking on a scale from 0 to 20. These grades are translated without major difficulties into the ECTS grading scale, the main distinction located at the pass (10 ≤) or fail (10 ≥) ‘border’.

1 local credit is equal to 1 ECTS credit.

Facilities

Library

The library provides seating for over 70 people and has open shelving and approximately 40,000 books, 220 running subscriptions and various databases and CD-ROMs. In addition, the library has an up-to-date PC area. The library is part of Anet, the automatic library system of the University of Antwerp, which also includes the city of Antwerp’s public library catalogues and those of various other institutes of higher education. There is one Xerox machine in the library and one in the main hall. Copy cards are for sale at the library desk.

Computers Two computer labs (2 x 21 PC's) are used for teaching (machine translation, computer-aided translation, word processing, Swift subtitling software. etc.), the other (32 PCs) is available for independent study and has an additional 2 OPAC PCs, 1 san PC and 1 CD-ROM PC. A separate room is provided for the internal subtitling network. The subtitling PCs have Scan titling, Swift or Titlevision software. Subtitling is taught only in the English section, but independent studies in subtitling are possible. Only the students taking the subtitling course or doing a special project in subtitling are allowed to use the subtitling computers. Multimedia The institute has two language labs besides the two computer labs subtitling room (cf. above).In addition, various classrooms are equipped with TV monitors and VCRs, projectors, CD players, satellite dishes, DVD players, etc. The department of Translators and Interpreters also has a video library and an extensive collection of multimedia materials (including language courses) which can be consulted by the students.
