  • International 49Er Class
International 49er Class www.49er.org PRESS RELEASE For more information: [email protected] Day 5; July 12, 2011 2011 SEIKO 49er Europeans Fast Track moves Aussies into the Lead An overnight rain cleared the air for the sailors and gave fresh conditions producing four spectacular races. The 49ers began the day in 10 knots of breeze which increased throughout the afternoon with puffs to 22 knots, providing a fast track. “Today was like go-kart driving; a small course with 3 laps” commented Thomas Ploessel, the crew of Erik Heil, two young sailors from Germany (23 and 22 years) who currently sit in 8th. The duo qualified in third place for the gold fleet and had three good races today but also sailed one of their discards (5-9-21-6). Ploessel and Heil have been competing together for ten years, beginning in the Teeny, a small doublehanded boat sailed in Germany. Four years ago the duo switched to the 49er after being too heavy for the 470 and have never looked back. Asked if they were surprised by their success this week Ploessel responded “A little. We know that we are good; we’ve been training a lot.” And on the question of any pressure sailing with the more experienced teams, “A little, but we see that we can beat them, and that’s a good thing!” Seven places in front of the Germans, in true world champion form, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) sailed a 9-3-1-2 to move them in the lead by a two point margin over yesterday’s leaders Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign (GBR) who had a 1-7-11-7 day.

  • The Laurels Go to New Zealand, Great Britain and Denmark at the European Championships
August, 2013 The laurels go to New Zealand, Great Britain and Denmark at the European Championships. The climax of racing at the SAP 49er & 49erFX Europeans 2013 in Aarhus, Denmark, delivered a nail-biting finale. Large crowds came out to witness the action on the promenade adjacent to the race track with thousands more watching the live streaming online. A glorious day of sun and blue sky made for a perfect day's sailing. After a tense last race, overall victory in the 49er Class went to London 2012 Olympic silver medallists, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke of New Zealand, with Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign from the UK taking second place and securing the “Best in Europe” title. Winning the first ever 49erFX European Championship crown were Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen of Denmark. Attention for both classes now turns to the Class World Championships in Marseille, France from 21 to 29 September. “This is the big one for us this year and we will see how we go then against the Kiwis,” said Fletcher. A thrilled Baad Nielsen said, “It is a fantastic achievement, it is so amazing to win. The next big thing is going to be the 49erFX Worlds in Marseille, so we are looking forward to some racing there. We have two weeks of summer holiday and then we will start training again.” Seiko has been the Watch Partner of the International 49er Association since 2007, and supports its development with both equipment and financial support. The new Seiko Velatura collection celebrates this partnership.

International 49er Class www.49er.org PRESS RELEASE For more information: [email protected] Final; July 13, 2011 2011 SEIKO 49er Europeans Aussies win SEIKO European Championship Although from the other side of the world, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) came and conquered the SEIKO European Championship over the sixty-four boat fleet from twenty-one countries. From the start, the duo stayed consistent, qualifying second going into the gold finals and taking the lead mid-way through. Jensen’s comment on winning the Europeans was “this was lighter than most regattas we do in Europe and we’ve struggled a little in the light stuff, so it was good to win this one.” The gold fleet held one race in the morning setting the medal race contenders for the afternoon race held just off the shoreside. On their medal race performance, Outteridge said, “We were over at the start, so was Dylan (Fletcher) so we both went back and we managed to keep just ahead of him and then we pulled back through to fourth so we’re pretty happy with that.” Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign (GBR) were happy with their silver medal and claimed European champions as the first top European boat. Sign credited their earlier Sail For Gold performance as a learning lesson saying that “a consistent series will get you inside the top 3.” Simon and Emil Toft Nielsen (DEN) moved into third overall following a good medal race. “We were pretty close with the Austrians in the fight for the bronze and some pressure from the Alonso brothers (ESP) who were just behind, so we couldn’t go into the medal race with any other ideas than to focus on our own race,” commented Simon Nielsen.
