Fondly known as the ‘‘Mayor of Murrays Bay,’’ and a barefooted fixture on the beach, Richard Beachman has died. The 68 year old moved into the bay in the early 1970s and did a lot for the community. WARM UP WITH Painting Complimentary Soup tells 100 year tale of battle

TOM DILLANE

Betty and Aubrey Kneller have a picture hanging in their Takapuna home worth at least a thousand words. Soon after immigrating to Auckland from Essex England in 1973, they bought a painting of Jack Cornwell, one of the youngest ever Victoria Cross medal winners. Cornwell died, aged 16, during the Battle of Jut- land, the largest naval battle of World War I, as a battleship turret gunner. The painting was a print reproduction of a portrait by famous English royal court painter Frank O. Salisbury, which the Kneller’s found in a laneway bric-a-brac shop in Auckland CBD. All it took was a mobile phone application to spring Lauren Davies into action. She was watching television earlier this year when she learned about AED Locations, a project to help make people aware of their nearest automated external defibrillator. After downloading the app, the Beach Haven resident was shocked to realise the closest AEDs were more than a three minute drive away or unavailable after business hours. ‘‘If something were to go wrong everyone in Birkdale and Beach Haven would be stuck,’’ Davies says. ‘‘If something were to go wrong everyone in Birkdale and Beach Haven would be stuck’’ Lauren Davies
