Environmental Science 303 3rd Quarter Project : Book Reports Description, Guidelines and Timeline

General Description : For the 3rd quarter’s project each student will be reading a book with an environmental theme and reporting on the book by choosing one of the ideas listed below. A list of books from which students can choose follows and students are encouraged to use the internet to find reviews and a further synopsis of the book before deciding once and for all. Books can be found in our library at the high school or across the street. (Please see Mrs. Mowery. She can arrange an inter-library loan if our libraries do not have the book.) Books can also be purchased at a local book store.

Guidelines: . Specific Guidelines for each of the projects can be found in this packet. Generally, students will pick a book and bring it to class (some books may be kept in the classroom as well) everyday. . There will be 3 reading days in class for students to read their books, but I strongly encourage reading at home and would like to invite parents to read the book as well. . We will have 1 workday where students will bring in supplies to work on their report projects. . Students will write 3 half-page summaries throughout the working period.

Purpose:  It’s fun!  Reading is Fundamental (still, even though you’re in high school)  It’s easy. Just get a book and read. The projects allow you to be creative in many ways.  Reading a story, even if it’s fiction is a good way to learn about things.

Book Suggestions Included in this packet… These are only suggestions and students who would like to read a different book can ask me for approval.

Projects: Students can pick any of the projects below to report on their book. Specific guidelines for each project are included in this packet.

Book Report Project General Guidelines A more detailed guideline packet will be given when the student decides which project she/he will be doing to report on the book.

File Folder Report: The report is basically displayed on a file folder with the following information provided. On the front cover: a picture of an event from the book. Inside left cover: timeline of events that take place in the book Inside right-hand side: stapled pages of a written report Back cover: Title of book, author and your name.

Time Capsule Book Report A container of your choice is used for the time capsule. Cover the container with paper and then decorate the lid and sides of the container so that it shows the theme of your book. A written summation of the book is placed inside the capsule, plus 5 items that represent the narrative elements of your book. (there are directions on the detailed guidelines about narrative elements). An oral component of this project is necessary, but students may present just to the teacher instead of the whole class.

Scrapbook This project will include 5-6 scrapbook style pages each highlighting different aspects of the book. The pages should include the following information Title, author, and your name Character “sketches” Setting Problems and solutions Theme of the book Etc.

Gameboard You will create a game board, complete with pictures and game pieces, with the aspects of your book in the squares leading to an end point.

Make a Book Report Sandwich Guidelines are provided for you to make a sandwich out of the aspects of your book. The lettuce is the summary, a tomato serves as the book’s setting, the main character or plot can be the meat… and so on.

Power Point Recipe Each slide of the power point presentation represents needed ingredients for your book. For example… 1 Cup of plot on one slide includes a summary of story events. Guidelines will follow.

Photostory Project The aspects of the story are presented on a Photostory, where the reader becomes one of the characters of the book.
