1 Walk In My Shoes Ideas Writers Workshop Daily Plan
1. Mini-Lesson Focus: Procedural Process Trait Conventions
ELACC3RL6: Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. ELACC4RL6: Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the difference between first- and third-person narrations ELACC5RL6: Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events are described. Although these are Reading standards, students will be able to demonstrate understanding by writing from another point of view.
Walk In My Shoes: In this minilesson, students will practice writing from a different point of view. Begin by reading a book such as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and explain to the class that everything a writer writes has to have a point of view. Discuss how the book is different from the traditional story of the Three Little Pigs. Show different pairs of shoes or pictures of shoes from printed off from the internet. Choose one and brainstorm on the overhead or the whiteboard what type of person would wear those particular shoes. Answer some of the questions together from the attached sheet. Tell the students that they will practice today in Writer’s Workshop writing from a different point of view. Pass out a picture of a shoe to each student (or pair of students) and have them imagine what it would be like to “walk” in that shoe for a day. Have them answer at least 10 (or any amount of your choice) from the attached questions during Writer’s Workshop. These questions can later be used to establish a main character for a story. The answers to the questions should be kept in the writing folder. See sample on page 3. 2. Status of Class 3. Student Writing/Teacher Conferring
4. Author Share: Student Teacher
Call students back to meeting area. Allow various students to share some of their answers to the questions. Discuss what it means to “walk in someone else’s shoes”. Reiterate the importance of having a point of view when writing any piece.

Troup County Schools 2012 3 Walk In My Shoes My name is Sammie Jo, and these are my favorite boots—size 6, bright pink, and fancy. I wear them as often as my mama and daddy will let me.
I am 9 years old, and I go to South River Elementary School. I am in fourth grade, but I don’t really like school too much. I would rather be out in the pasture with Goldie, my horse.
I am about 5 feet tall—pretty tall for a girl my age. My hair is long, curly, and generally uncooperative, so it is usually pulled back into a ponytail. I have brown eyes, and I am stronger and faster than any boy or girl in my class. Even in my pink cowgirl boots I beat everyone in a foot race. I have even been known to give my opponents a head start. It doesn’t matter. I beat ‘em every time.
My favorite book is Black Beauty. (It’s about the only chapter book I ever finished all the way through.) My favorite movie is Black Beauty. I have watched that DVD so much that I wore it out and had to ask for a new one for my last birthday. I guess you can tell I like anything to do with horses.
My favorite food is cheese. I love macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, cheese pizza—slap some cheese on just about any food and I am happy. I have a bad habit of not using a napkin, though. My mama is always getting on to me about it. I usually use my sleeve or my hand. I know that is nasty, and I am working on being better about it.
That’s all I can think of to tell you about right. I’m off to get to work on my chores…
