PRESSLEY PLACE” IN 23 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HIS LIFETIME OF 24 PHILANTHROPY, BUSINESS LEADERSHIP, AND 25 COMMITMENT TO BETTERING HIS COMMUNITY. 26 27 Whereas, as a leader in the Abbeville business, church, and civic 28 communities in the early 1900’s, Mr. Pressley owned several 29 businesses throughout the city; and 30 31 Whereas, Mr. Pressley’s business enterprises included a 32 barbershop, a pool hall, a beauty shop, a restaurant on Spring 33 Street, a community market on Branch Street, a restaurant on 34 Church Street, and Smitty’s Automotive Repair Shop over a period 35 of more than forty years; and 36 37 Whereas, Mr. Pressley was greatly respected throughout his 38 community for his love of God and man and his philanthropy; and 39 40 Whereas, a devoted member of Shady Grove African Methodist 41 Episcopal Church, Mr. Pressley was also a charter member of 42 Dreher Masonic Lodge No. 370 of Abbeville and other benevolent

1 [1291] 1 1 societies and his leadership was instrumental in registering African 2 Americans to vote; and 3 4 Whereas, Mr. Pressley along with his wife, Maude, raised six 5 children to adulthood, Mary Jean, Dorothy Mae, John Wilbert, 6 Gloria Frances, Wallace Conway, and Betty Joan, all of whom 7 graduated from college or vocational school and have followed his 8 example of leadership in the church, community, and their 9 professions. An additional child, Clarence Eugene, died in 10 infancy; and 11 12 Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly 13 posthumously recognizes Clarence Eugene Pressley on the 14 occasion of the unveiling of a permanent marker on Spring Street 15 and the renaming of a portion of Spring Street to “Clarence E. 16 Pressley Place” by the Abbeville City Council and the induction to 17 the 2004 Abbeville County Hall of Fame by the Abbeville 18 Chamber of Commerce and the Abbeville Historical Society to 19 memorialize his accomplishments for future generations. Now, 20 therefore, 21 22 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 23 concurring: 24 25 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 26 Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the 27 family of the late Clarence Eugene Pressley on the honor of 28 receiving recognition by the City and County of Abbeville, the 29 Abbeville Historical Society, and the Abbeville Chamber of 30 Commerce by the placement of an historic marker on the site of his 31 principal business in the City of Abbeville, his induction into the 32 2004 Abbeville County Hall of Fame, and the renaming of a 33 portion of Spring Street to “Clarence E. Pressley Place” in 34 acknowledgement of his lifetime of philanthropy, business 35 leadership, and commitment to bettering his community. 36 37 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 38 Mr. Pressley’s oldest living child, Mrs. Dorothy Pressley Turner. 39 ----XX---- 40
