They should be encouraged to pack their own bags to ensure they know where everything is in the bag. 3. Please ensure that your child has enough clothing, 1x set of dry clothes per day and if possible 1 extra set in a waterproof stuff sack /bag for emergencies, in the bottom of their Rucksack/ kitbag. 4. Black bin bags are not suitable for wrapping sleeping bags/ bedding as they tear very easily, with the result that the contents are lost or soiled in transit, please use a stuff sack, they can be cheaply purchased from any camping shop or pound shop. 5. A Daysack is for carrying small items on hikes, beach and day trips - packed lunches and drinks. 6. A Rucksack/ Kitbag is a large bag capable of holding ALL the kit required for camp. Sleeping bags and roll mats can be carried separately, in named stuff sacks. 7. PLEASE NAME EVERYTHING from underpants to knife, fork spoon, coats, rucksack, sleeping bag etc. You would be amazed how many pairs of underpants, jackets, roll mats etc. we bring back from camp and nobody claims them. PLEASE NAME EVERYTHING. Label with either indelible ink and/or engraving as appropriate, with your child’s name. (The old favourites of paper labels held on with sticky tape, or nail varnish dots are not

The paper labels wash off after the second or third meal, and it is amazing how many mums use the same shade of nail varnish). 8. Equipment Notes Here is some basic information regarding some of the items you may require / should be aware of for camp. Sleeping Bags Synthetic filled bags are easier to clean than a natural filling like down bags. Synthetic bags will dry faster than natural if wet. Zips can be a source of cold if no baffle is fitted. A 2-season sleeping bag will be fine for summer camping, an optional liner can be used, however we would prefer 3 season bags as they give more all year round comfort, especially in the UK preferably Mummy Style. Rucksack Should be around the 65-80 litre mark, expect to pay anything from £20 to £100, the rucksack in particular will be used though out your child’s time in Scouting. Daysacks Should be light and comfortable, expect to pay anything from £1 upwards, around £10-£20 mark, not forgetting these can be used as school bags when they get older! Footwear Boots give a better ankle support and normally have better soles than shoes if you are hiking. Warm Wear A number of layers is warmer than one thick one and the warmth can be regulated more easily - do not forget your hands and head. Waterproof Outer Garment A Waterproof jacket is an essential piece of camp kit in the UK climate, waterproof trousers are optional. Expect to pay anything from £10 upwards for a pakamak style jacket. Mug/Plate/Bowl Please ensure they are NOT ceramic or breakable. Metal or plastic contained in a string PE kit type bag, all named including knife fork spoon. Children get upset if they cannot find ‘mums best cutlery at camp!’ Wash Kit To include toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, flannel, brush/ comb all in a wash bag. (Toilet wipes and tissues – optional) Torch Do not pack your torch with batteries fitted (or at the bottom of your kit) as it could easily be accidentally turned on and you will arrive at the camp with flat batteries. Any style of torch will do head / battery or wind up. Bearing in mind the wind up torch will not run out at camp – no batteries! Pocket Money NO money is required for this camp. Jewellery Earrings, nose rings, and other decorative jewellery are NOT recommended on camps and activities. Pen Knives. Not required on this camp. A Leader will have one if required for any activity. We don’t normally allow any type of pen knife etc. at camp but there may be occasions when we do mainly in Scouts, however on those special one off occasions any knives brought would need to be handed in to the Leader in a named bag and your child would only use it under very strict supervision for a specific bush craft task and at no other time would they be allowed to use or carry onsite. A Parental consent form would also be requested before any such event Sprays Spays of any kind such as Deodorant/ Midge/ Fly etc. are not allowed at camp as they can damage the tents if sprayed inside and irritate asthmatic children. Please use a stick deodorant if required and Leaders will have midge spray. Final Comment: Please do not spend a fortune on kit, most can be purchased at reasonable prices, or borrowed from friends! Field and Trek / Sports Direct. UBC caravans – Gosforth. Royal Quays, Argos, Go Outdoors, Great Outdoor Superstore etc. shop around. (Most outdoor shops may give up to 10% discount if you mentions scouts cubs etc.) Sleeping bags - £20- £45 Kit bags £10 - £30 Rucksacks £20 - £100
