JOB DESCRIPTION

Main Responsibilities

a) Liaise with The Wildlife Trust's national marine team to ensure SWT contributes positively towards The Wildlife Trusts' Living Seas Strategy.

b) Lobby decision makers to support effective implementation of the Marine Act, especially with respect to MPAs, the work of IFCAs and marine spatial planning.

c) Work with other SE Wildlife Trusts to support campaigning on marine issues and promotion of Marine Week.

d) Raise the public profile of marine ecology, through website, press, publications, talks and promotional activity.

e) Co-ordinate and deliver the Sussex Seasearch project, working with volunteer divers to gather evidence to improve knowledge, support conservation initiatives and influence marine management

f) Support SWT officers to deliver marine conservation messages through their activities. This includes contributions to planning responses for applications with potentially significant marine ecosystem impacts

g) Work with volunteers to develop and deliver new habitat and species survey and monitoring programmes to improve knowledge and gather evidence to support conservation initiatives

h) Develop volunteering capacity and participation in SWT marine work.

i) Work with the SWT fundraising team and others to develop and fundraise for marine conservation projects.

j) Promote the Trust wherever possible, in particular recruiting new members and acting as an ambassador for our vision and values SUSSEX WILDLIFE TRUST

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essentia Desirabl Experience l e Significant, relevant experience in marine ecology and conservation x Conveying information to a variety of audiences, occasionally in difficult situations x Working across sectors (i.e. public bodies, industry, NGOs etc) x Diving qualification – PADI Dive Master or equivalent x (the job does not include diving, but knowledge of diving practices is required) Dive marshalling x Marine biological recording - either professionally or as a volunteer x Training or education work - either as a volunteer or professionally x

Essentia Desirabl Knowledge l e A degree in a marine ecology related discipline or equivalent substantial X experience of working in this field Marine Protected Areas, including Marine Conservations Zones x An understanding of marine spatial planning at UK & local levels x An appreciation of The Wildlife Trusts' Living Seas Vision x A good understanding of interests and communication channels across sectors x Knowledge of Sussex coast and marine environment X Marine biological recording and data storage methods x A familiarity/understanding of marine habitats and species associated with Sussex x An understanding of the importance of & application of Health and Safety policies x

Miscellaneous

 Full driving licence required as may need to visit other Trust locations not easily accessible by public transport  This role will include weekend and occasional evening work to deliver events, courses and talks  In order for the organisation to work effectively you may be required to assist with other areas of work and therefore you should be prepared to undertake other duties appropriate to the post as delegated by the Trust  All staff are required to abide by organisational policies and procedures
