ARCHITECTURE & INFRASTRUCTURE COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES Friday, October 10, 2014 9:00 – 10:30 AM FAC 228D

I. 9:00—9:30 Mainframe Commissioning – Endorse (Rich Janes) Rich Janes sought out endorsement on the guiding principles for UT’s mainframe decommissioning. The document included the current efforts and projected efforts starting in 2017 and 2018. After 2018, any unit without a reasonable plan to transition off the mainframe will work with the ASMP Application Modernization team to decide on a replacement approach so that their applications can be accounted for in the decommissioning plan. The costs associated with a unit coming off the mainframe will be the responsibility of the unit.

AIC did not endorse this.

II. 9:30—9:50 Wi-Fi Cert-pocolypse (William Green, Jason Wang) William Green and Jason Wang discussed the need for a new certificate for restricted.utexas.edu that expires July 3, 2015. A group is being created to investigate various platforms and their reaction to required certificate change. Many options are being considered and a recommendation will be presented to AIC in February.

IV. 9:50 – 10:20 Finalize Committee Priorities for 2014-2014 Academic Year- Discussion

Angela Newell presented the final priorities and asked if any committee members had any questions or anything to add.

Q. Where does the new TSC fit in? We are working on TSC training and SANS as well. We’re going to pilot with ATS and ITS. All the TSC can take advantage of SANS training on the mainframe. We’re looking at several levels of training (basic, intermediate, and advanced).

Q. Is that something that AIC review? A. Absolutely.

Q. There will be an exception process but what are the consequences if you do not get certified? A. It’ll be a condition of employment.

Q. I don’t see anything for our Linux users. Can we make sure that those machines are in compliance? I don’t know if any other groups have bought anything like that. A. Trice Humpert uses Puppet in this group. We are sending out a survey of UT Puppet users. It would not cost much to get a side license. There will also a standard way of identifying UTEIDs for Linux. V. 10:20 – 10:30 Committee Chair – Election Shannon Shrank was unanimously elected as committee chair of AIC.
