Dear Student:
I would like to welcome you to Pre-AP English II at Porter High School. I am looking forward to sharing a rigorous yet enriching 2016-2017 with you. While this course will not be easy, it will prepare you for the following two years of AP courses and ultimately for the AP tests that you will take. The first challenge of the upcoming school year will be how well you discipline yourself to complete the following work over the summer months. Please purchase and read William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies. This is a classic 10th grade reading experience as well as a novel that is on the College Bound Reading List. This book can be purchased online at websites such as Amazon.com or at any bookstore of your choice. You will need to complete the following summer reading activities before the first day of school: 1. Purchase and annotate (mark, highlight, take notes) your copy of Lord of the Flies. Suggestions include highlighting or underlining names and information about each new character as they appear in the book, circling new or challenging vocabulary that you encounter, and identifying examples of figurative language such as similes, metaphors, personifications, and hyperboles. In addition, write notes in the margins with your thoughts and questions as you read. Also, make note when the settings change. Your book should look "used" when you finish reading it. Be prepared to turn this in the FIRST day of school. 2. The AP literary terms sheet is attached with a list of 50 terms. You will need to define each word and find an example for each. Please prepare flashcards or Quizlets by writing the word and definition on one side and an example on the other. You will need to be familiar with these words and examples by the FIRST day of school. The expectation is that you have all of the above assignments with you on the first day of class. Have a wonderful summer! I look forward to meeting you soon!
Sincerely,
