Apr. ’98 – Date Technical Support Manager

The role has two main managerial facets, technical support for the products and QA & Environmental system management. The marketing aspect within Technical Support aims to raise the awareness of the company by publishing articles and editorials on coatings related products and issues, by presenting technical papers on behalf of the company and by developing user training programmes. I am also responsible for the product training delivered by the customer support team to Elcometer employees, distributors and customers. The Technical Support Department provides technical oversight to sales literature, advertising, press releases, training, demonstrations and technical support including operating instructions and service manuals. I am responsible for technical support for existing products in the Elcometer range and for advising the M.D. about technical issues raised by Users and Distributors. Monitoring of relevant measurement methods and techniques available, in both research and development phases, and recommending such projects to the M.D. is also within my remit. I am an active member of ASTM, ISO, CEN & BSI standards committees, SSPC and NACE technical committees and I am chair of the ASTM D01 Main Committee and the D01.23 Sub-committee. Responsible for development and introduction of a new coating thickness technology based on the Thermal Wave principle, through a collaboration agreement with the University of Bath. The project was closed in April 1998 and the Development and Application team was re-deployed into the core business.

Responsible for the planning, introduction and launch of new products for the Elcometer range of test and measurement equipment. Including the preparation and agreement of new product proposals, marketing and engineering specifications, the planning and monitoring of development, both in-house and third party, together with the preparation and implementation of product launch plans Responsible for recommendations to the M.D. on repair policy and the management of the Repair and Servicing of the Elcometer range of products. This includes the management of internal and external repair and re- calibration resources.

Nov. '89 - Sept. '93 General Sales Manager (Elcometer Products)

Responsible for sales and marketing of all Elcometer Products worldwide, including merchanted products from the USA and other sources, including two-year’s experience of selling Dataputer SPC Systems. Management of internal and external Sales personnel and Export Dealers and Distributors. Management and organisation of Trade Shows and Exhibitions worldwide.

Oct. '87 - Nov. '89 Quality Assurance Manager (Elcometer and Dataputer Products)

Started reorganisation toward BS 5750. Accreditation to BS EN ISO 9002 was achieved in May 1994. Developed final test methods for both Elcometer and Dataputer product ranges together with a traceable coating thickness measurement method for standards.

Mar. '83 - Oct. '87 UK Sales And Technical Services Manager (Elcometer Products)

Successfully developed the home market for Elcometer Products including the achievement of £1.0 million annual turnover in the U.K. for the first time in 1985/86. Additional responsibilities for Technical Presentations, UK Exhibitions, Export Distributor and Dealer Training and new product assessments.

Apr. '82 - Mar. '83 Projects Manager (Elcometer Products)

Recruited to oversee the transition of new products from the R. & D. Laboratory to Sales by co-ordinating the activities of Production, Marketing and Technical Departments. Linking these activities and contributing to sales literature, operating instructions and launch packs.

Starting as a Technical Assistant to a Microwave Development Engineer, I progressed through Microwave Development Engineer and Senior Microwave Development Engineer to Microwave Development Group Leader specialising in metallic coating techniques for semiconductor and dielectric materials used for components and circuits for RADAR and communications applications.

Married with one son aged 40 years. My wife, of more than 43 years, was a teacher of modern languages to 11 to 16 year olds, French and Italian with additional responsibility as a Head of Year and an examinations officer. She is now retired. My son, having finished his Masters Degree (Computer Science) at the University of Bath, is employed as a Risk Compliance Manager for a company based in Manchester.
