Wetland Wonderland Presenter S Script

Duck Race! Water Science

Title of Activity Presenter’s Script Overview: Give a brief overview of activity.

Overall Expectations:

. . . Describe messages to present to students.

Introduction:

Proposed Dialogue for Presenter Students’ anticipated (ACTION OF PRESENTER) responses (Ask students about the activity centres they have visited today and if they’ve had fun.

Q: Has anyone here heard the word "FORCE" yet? Q: Who can tell me what is Force? A: Force is just a fancy word for pushing or pulling. If I push on something or pull on it, then I am applying a force to it. Answer Force makes things move or, more accurately, makes things change their motion. Use the pump as an example of muscular force by moving the pump handle up and down Q: Does anyone know any different types of Force? Those are all great examples. A: There two natural forces, gravity and magnetic forces. The force we are going to talk about today is Gravity, which is Answer a natural force. We're going to talk about how it works to move water through the rivers.

Rivers and water are always moving in the natural world. Answer Water is always trying to get to the lowest place on the ground. Q: Have you ever noticed the water running down your street or into the ditch? That is natural force working right in your own neighbourhood.

Q: Now if we have a look at this activity centre, what do Answer we notice about the "RIVERS" within it? We notice that the "rivers" are at different angles, which allows the water to travel from the high point in the river to the low point—Just like in a watershed! The water travelling along the river is doing so by the FORCE of Gravity!

Q: What other forces will be used to move the duck Answer along the river? That’s right, the force of US moving the pump up and down and the speed at which we do it, will cause the duck to speed up, slow down or change direction. We’re using mechanical forces. Before we begin our activity centre, I have a few more Tornado questions for you about forces in nature and in our Hurricane environment. Thunderstorm Q: Who can give me an example of a force of nature that involves high winds? Tornado, hurricane, thunderstorm Q: How about a force with high water? Tsunami Tsunami, Hurricane, Cyclone, Wind Causing Waves Hurricane Cyclone Q: what sort of things can happen to our natural world Wind Causing Waves and the people that are in it, when these types of forces happen? People die Loss of homes, loss of life, loss of natural beauty. People get sick Those are all great answers and feedback. At the end of the day we need to really remember that natural forces are very powerful and we need to do our best to respect nature and the beauty within it. Q: Who is ready to give our activity a try?!

Activity: Description of Activity

In this activity we are going to have a duck race! We are going to investigate, through this activity how the Responses from force of water moves the ducks through the river AND how the participants, if force of pushing and pulling moves the water through the required. pump to act as the rain storm.

Lets investigate what happens to the speed of the water in the river when we pump the hand pump slowly…. Lets investigate what happens to the speed of the water in the river when we pump the hand pump quickly? What happens to the speed of the duck? What do you notice about the how quickly or slowly the duck moves?

Discussion and Wrap Up:

Q: Can anyone tell me the different types of forces we Desired response from used to move the ducks along? participants.

We used gravitationally forces to move the water and mechanical forces to push and pull the pump.

Q: Now after work

Does anyone have any other questions for me? Did you have fun participating in this activity centre today??

Note: Each activity time has been allotted 15 minutes. Please keep rotating children through the activity centres until the air horn goes.
