Job purpose This post forms part of the ERC funded Rome and its Mediterranean Ports Project (RoMP) (PortusLimen Project), directed by Simon Keay. You will be joining two established teams in Southampton and Lyon to complete important work illuminating the development and use of Roman Ports. This post is divided into two separate work packages. Work Package 1 (6 months in 2015): A geochemicaI study of cores from Ostia (Italy), and Ephesus (Turkey) and Utica (Tunisia). The study is to identify and analyse trace and major elements present in the cores together with Pb isotopes. The cores have been already been studied sedimentologically, and have some Carbon14 dates associated with them. The post is based in the Archaeology department of the University of Southampton but the successful applicant will spend the first c.3 months undertaking chemical analyses at the ENS at Lyon, While at Lyon, he/she will be under the supervision of the Jean-Philippe Goiran of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). The remaining three-month period will be spent at Southampton, in order to undertake research on the broader implication of the results to the ports concerned. Outcome: The applicant will be responsible for producing a report for each core studied by the completion of the work package.

Work Package 2 (6 months in 2016): Further geochemical analyses of cores currently being obtained from other Roman port sites around the Mediterranean. These ports are Gades (Cadiz), Tarraco (Tarragona), Utica, Portus and Puteoli (Pozzuoli). As with Work Package 1, the post is based in the Archaeology department of the University of Southampton but the successful applicant will spend the first c.3 months undertaking chemical analyses at the ENS in Lyon. While at Lyon, they will be under the supervision of Jean-Philippe Goiran of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).
