It won’t do to say that the reader is too dumb or too lazy to keep pace with the train of thought. If the reader is lost, it’s usually because the writer hasn’t been careful enough. The carelessness can take any number of forms. Perhaps a sentence is so excessively cluttered that the reader can’t hack their way through the verbiage because they simply don’t know the words. Perhaps, a sentence has been so shoddily constructed that the reader could read it in several different ways. The writer may have switched pronouns in mid-sentence or switched tenses. The writer may also digress from the topic and is no longer talking about the original idea. The writer may begin talking about their vacation to the beach and end of talking about a rocket going to the moon. Another reason readers might be confused is if the writer did not make a logical transition from Sentence A to Sentence B-the writer, in whose head the connection is clear, has not bothered to provide the missing link to make it clear to his readers. Finally, some writers use incorrect words to mean one thing when they really mean another.
