*Choice List: All 7th graders, select one novel to read from this list.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. We think it is important that you start to read with out knowing what it’s about. If you do start to tread this book, you will go on a journey with a nine-year-old called Bruno. Sooner or later, you will arrive with Bruno at a fence. Fences like this exist all over the world. We hope you never have to encounter such a fence. (from the book jacket) Boy on the Wooden Box – Leon Leyson. As the youngest member of Schindler’s list, Leyson offers a unique perspective on the man who became his lifelong hero and his first-hand account of day-to-day existence in the factory. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. In 1943, during the German occupation of Denmark, ten-year-old Annemarie learns how to be brave and courageous when she helps shelter her Jewish friend from the Nazis. The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. Hannah resents the traditions of her Jewish heritage until time travel places her in the middle of a small Jewish village in Nazi-occupied Poland. ADVANCED READER OPTION: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Trying to make sense of the horrors of World War II, Death relates the story of Liesel--a young German girl whose book-stealing and story-telling talents help sustain her family and the Jewish man they are hiding, as well as their neighbors. Note: Descriptions from Novelist. Free Choice: Select 3 books to read that will hold your interest and will challenge you. Listed (on the back) are a few links to award winning books.
