1 [1293] 1 1 Whereas, a Physical Education and Assistant Football Coach for 2 the University of Maryland from 1948-1955, Senator Giese never 3 gave up his love for education and athletics, becoming the Head 4 Football Coach at the University of South Carolina in 1956 and its 5 Athletic Director in 1959; and 6 7 Whereas, while working as an Associate Professor and Department 8 Head for Health and Physical Education, Senator Giese managed 9 to obtain his Doctorate degree in Education from Florida State 10 University in 1965 and became the Dean of the College of Health 11 and Physical Education at the University of South Carolina in 1974 12 where he served in this position for four years; and 13 14 Whereas, as a Professor at the University of South Carolina from 15 1979-1983, Senator Giese was well-liked by the students and 16 faculty and was named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 1984 17 when he felt the call to serve the people of Richland County in the 18 Senate; and 19 20 Whereas, in addition to his numerous achievements in the 21 educational field, Senator Giese is also the author of several 22 publications, has served as a member of the President’s Council on 23 Physical Fitness and Sports, the vice president of the International 24 Federation of University Sports, and the Executive Commissioner 25 of the South Carolina Amateur Athletic Union; and 26 27 Whereas, a member of the American Association for Health, 28 Physical Education and Recreation, Senator Giese has also served 29 as the Executive Director of the United States Collegiate Sports 30 Council, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the United States 31 Sports Academy, and Project Administrator of the Summer 32 Feeding Program for the USDA; and 33 34 Whereas, a humanitarian in every sense of the word, Senator Giese 35 has worked with the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute and 36 pioneered the Nigerian Sports Project and the National Youth 37 Sports Program; and 38 39 Whereas, elected to the State Senate in 1985, Senator Warren 40 Kenneth Giese has served for nearly twenty consecutive years and 41 his presence will be sorely missed upon his retirement as will his 42 continuous efforts to better the lives of all those constituents in

1 [1293] 2 1 Richland and Kershaw counties who have loved and cherished him 2 throughout the past twenty years. Now, therefore, 3 4 Be it resolved by the Senate: 5 6 That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by 7 this resolution, honor and recognize Senator Warren Kenneth 8 Giese upon his retirement from the South Carolina Senate after 9 nearly twenty years of service to the State of South Carolina and 10 extend best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors. 11 12 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 13 Senator Warren Kenneth Giese of Richland County. 14 ----XX---- 15
