Willard for His Birthday, and . a Medical Procedure

BULL SHEET The bulletin of the Pueblo Optimist Club Tucson, Arizona ______

29 February 2016

This is fun! A once in every four years happening! A Bull Sheet dated February 29 th. Happy Leap Year. Here is what has happened the past couple of weeks with our Optimist Family.

Looking around the tables, the following members and guests were spotted enjoying breakfast: Dave Arens, Stu Bagwell, Willard Adams, Dave Beeson, Ed Bracamonte, Dan Davis, Paul Diaz, Bobby Garcia, Pablo Hernandez, Esthermarie Hillman, Theresa Hernandez, “Bear” Lundquist, Candy Davis, Jose Ortiz, Jim Pfafflin, Jim Rico, Nadia Valle, Julie Toepper and Mike Toepper.

Guests: Pam Boyer from the 3000 Club.

Fines: Willard for his birthday, and …. A medical procedure

Dan put in a fine collected from Bob Lewis for leaving early Thursday for Rocky Point.

Mike Toepper as his Tucson home finally sold

Paul Diaz because his wife has now put up with him for 50 years!

Bits & Pieces:

Jose passed around a news-letter from Alice Vail School where our club was thanked for the donation of colored paper. Esthermarie brought in $100 that was donated by Park Place Mall. It was the change from dispensing machines in the rest rooms, and from their metal recycling. Through Esthermarie, Park Place Mall has been more than kind to our club.

“Wings For Women” received a grant for 4 computers and their stations. These are currently being installed, and they are in the process of becoming certified to do GED testing.

Program:

Pam Boyer from the 3000 Club chatted with us about the “Market on the Move”, and explained the recycling efforts of the 3000 Club.

The 3000 Club was born in April of 2008, in Nogales, Arizona when Lon Taylor came up with an idea to save the Nogales food bank. Find 3,000 supporters who can donate $100 per year. As fate would have it, this idea took off and soon chapters had sprung up all across Arizona. It was a process of going to Nogales, and taking home produce that otherwise might not have been used.

By October of 2010, the Market On the Move had come into being. The 3000 Club partnered with churches and other non-profit organizations to host weekly “Farmers Markets”. Where a supporter can donate $10 and then receive up to 60 pounds of produce. By the end of the winter produce in May of 2014, there were more than 50 distribution sites in Metro Phoenix and in Tucson. Over 30 million pounds of produce had been rescued and redistributed.

Meeting on February 25 th – Rodeo Parade Day:

Gathered for Machaca, Tamales or whatever else for breakfast were Ed Bracamonte, Stu Bagwell, Dave Arens, Willard Adams, Dan Davis, Paul Diaz, Bobby Garcia, Pablo Hernandez, Esthermarie Hillman, Bob Lewis, Candy Davis, “Bear” Lundquist, Jose Ortiz, Jim Pfafflin, Jim Rico, Ralph Stubbs and Skip Stubbs (the Mountain Man).

Fines: “Bear” for leaving our banner in his truck, and blaming Peggy.

Stu for winning a “Quarter” in the Tanque Verde Club’s Super Bowl game.

Bob Lewis for his birthday and for being late “when he had a guest”.

Guests: Steve Agan on recommendation of his father. Bits & Pieces:

President “Bear” gave a report on the District conference from the past weekend. He also had “Honor Club” certificates to hand out along with a large number of “Dime A Day” pins.

This is the last call for Girl Scout cookies. Call Jose if you still feel the need.

Ralph (‘Lil Ralph’) Stubbs has retired from the City of Tucson and should be able to be more active with us. I remember about the time he started with the city, and was assigned to the Southside Police Station as our custodian. That was the mid 80’s and he was as much a part of our “gas house” gang as were any of my officers. A career well done, and well deserved!

Program:

I’m not really sure that Steve Agan came to us with the intent of being our program, but he did share a bit about what he does. Steve works for the Tucson Police Department in the Identification section. They are the folks who go to crime or accident scenes to process for evidence and to photograph everything. Again, I have a connection as that was a part of my last command with TPD, when John Neely was running the shop, and AFIS was in its infancy.

Steve’s father, John Agan was a member of the Tucson Optimist club way back when …. and recommended our club to him. Steve lives here on the south side, so we are a good fit.

Member & Friends news:

Alice McCleery, Bob’s widow, passed away in Illinois. She was cremated and interned here in Tucson with Bob.

Skip reported that Jack Estes has passed away. Jack was a charter member of our Pueblo club, and served as our second club President during the 1968 – 1969 year.

Wings For Women work day:

Saturday February 27th, there was a seven hour work day at the building that serves as the “Wings” headquarters. As reported by Bob Lewis, other than himself we had Esthermarie (the director), Linsey (the nail gunner), and Jim Pfafflin (the humorist), Bear with his tools, and Willard with a trailer full of food boxes. Bob had managed to “acquire” some needed plywood that was used for a new storage shed floor. In the end, much was accomplished:

New floor in the storage shed. Added wall bracing. Shelving brackets. New shelving. 50 food boxes unloaded and stacked for use in the No Child Goes Hungry project. Some food will be used to support program needs as well. Assembled two new chairs for the new computer stations. Then finally, all the items from the storage unit were sorted and put back in. Bob said that finding the correct lids for plastic containers was a challenge as there was a stack of each that didn’t really match.

Coming Events:

March 10th meeting = our speaker will be Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall who will talk about “The Courthouse Dog” program. It began in 2012 with the assistance of the Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy Center. Join us and learn about this unique program.

March 12th – Saturday = Board of Directors meeting at Micha’s. Breakfast at 8:30AM and the meeting set to be called to order at 9AM. This is also the day you can go to Green Valley to pick up your Optimist made sausage if you have ordered some.

Sometime in March, but before the 26th = we need to build two new “water stations” for the 4th Avenue Street Fair.

Thursday March 31st = help set up all of the water and work stations for the 4th Avenue Spring Street Fair.

Friday April 1st to Sunday April 3rd = work our booths at the Street Fair. Just like everything else, the more time “we” put in, the more money we will have for our projects. And late Sunday, we will need to break down our booths, load them up and take them “home”.

And …. Finally, from a shirt catalog that showed up at the ranch:

“I’d grow my own food if I could only find bacon seeds.” ‘Till next issue. Levi
