Name of Presenter: Lora Haller

Grade Level: Elementary MS HS University Special Needs (Please indicate grade level using these terms) Elementary, MS, HS, Special Needs

Background Information: Brief information about the artist, period, culture, etc. that applies to the lesson. The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides a science-based arts curriculum emphasizing conservation of waterfowl (ducks, geese, and swans) and wetlands. It is designed to spark youth interest in habitat conservation through a variety of complementary academic disciplines: science, art, math, and technology. Learn about how science is embedded through the activities in the free curriculum. Students in K-12th grade are encouraged to explore, investigate, and express what they’ve learned through the arts, and then interpret the natural world through artistic expression for the annual contest.

The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex (SNWRC) is the host site for the California program and hosts the annual judging for entries. California leads the way with thousands of entries from students annually due to its partnerships with many organizations and teachers. See how your school can participate and what materials are available to you and your students. Every contest participant receives a certificate and the top 100 winners receive ribbons and plaques. In California, hundreds of additional young artist awards and gifts are given to students. The SNWRC hosts 6 free travelling art bins that can be shipped to teachers across the state providing art supplies, books, and biofacts to aid in learning about waterfowl.
