WILLIAMS, PRESIDENT OF THE 12 NAACP, COLLETON COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF 13 HIS RETIREMENT, COMMEND HIM FOR HIS MANY 14 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE, AND WISH HIM MUCH 15 HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN THE DAYS AHEAD. 16 17 Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of 18 Representatives honors those individuals who give tirelessly of 19 themselves to the welfare of this state’s citizenry; and 20 21 Whereas, Raleigh R. Williams, retiring president of the NAACP, 22 Colleton County, stands among their number as an outstanding 23 civic leader, as well as a respected businessman and minister; and 24 25 Whereas, in preparation for his life’s work, the young Raleigh 26 completed his early education at Burke Industrial High School in 27 Charleston and began work as a bricklayer and later a 28 warehouseman; and 29 30 Whereas, answering the call of his country, he served from 1952 to 31 1972 as an enlisted airman in the United States Air Force, working 32 in various capacities, including medical supply officer and 33 management engineer; and 34 35 Whereas, during his time in the military, he attended night school 36 and completed a B.G.E. degree from the University of Omaha in 37 Nebraska, with a double major in business administration and 38 economics. Graduate work followed at the University of Colorado 39 and the University of Puget Sound in Washington State; and 40 41 Whereas, during a successful business career, Raleigh Williams 42 served as a certified public accountant, general contractor, real
[4781] 2 1 estate broker, and minister, narrowing his focus in 1988 to general 2 contractor where his company specialized in residential and 3 commercial building projects and highway construction; and 4 5 Whereas, a strong believer in active involvement with one’s 6 community, he twice has provided longterm leadership as 7 president of the Colleton County branch of the NAACP, beginning 8 in 1973, as well as serving in numerous other civic organizations; 9 and 10 11 Whereas, after many years of selfless service, he has stepped down 12 from his position as president of the Colleton County NAACP and 13 is also retiring from his businesses, R.W. Construction and R.W. 14 Realty; and 15 16 Whereas, having made his mark and set the bar of achievement 17 extraordinarily high in all his endeavors, Raleigh R. Williams will 18 be remembered with affection and gratitude by colleagues and 19 legislative friends for years to come. Now, therefore, 20 21 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 22 23 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 24 by this resolution, honor Raleigh R. Williams, president of the 25 NAACP, Colleton County, upon the occasion of his retirement, 26 commend him for his many years of dedicated service, and wish 27 him much happiness and fulfillment in the days ahead. 28 29 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 30 Raleigh R.
