Welcome Students and Parents to another Wonderful School Year!

Hello Parents and Students,

Welcome to Clayton Valley Charter High School and Mr. Anwar’s History class. This will be my third year teaching at CVCHS, and I am very excited to be a part of this endeavor and look forward to a wonderful year of teaching my students. The following is an outline of what you can expect from me as a teacher, what the students will learn and my expectations from my students this year.

My Philosophy as a Teacher

I believe High School is a great time of change in a young person’s life as they stride forward towards adulthood. High School should also be a time of incredible academic growth. Students at this stage of life need to learn that knowledge, a strong work ethic and a positive attitude are the keys to success in school and in life. Each student learns differently, and as a teacher I try to find as many ways as possible to help my students grow academically. The students are not only exposed to grade level reading and writing, but to media, tech skills, presentations and public speaking. The World History curriculum will give students context to the major issues in the world today. Understanding the context behind today’s issues and conflicts will empower students to interpret, influence, analyze and make sense of the modern world they live in.

As a parent of four children myself, I always see things from a parent’s perspective, so it is important that we build a relationship of trust to educate our children together. Though I work for CVCHS, I believe that you, the parents, are my ultimate bosses. I work for you and will work with you to make sure that we are providing the best education for our students. My classroom is always open to you, as it is to my students when I am on campus. I am also available anytime before school and after school or via my email after school hours. I look forward to meeting all of you and look forward to a successful year.

What we will learn about:

This class focuses on World History; from the end of the Renaissance up to the current times. The class will be multi-layered to give students a better understanding of the issues, conflicts, compromises and ideals of different historical periods. The concepts of historical thinking introduced in earlier grades continue to build with students locating and analyzing primary and secondary sources from multiple perspectives to draw conclusions. Students will also learn about such subjects as Economics, Politics, Geography, and Sociology as we study each section of the textbook. All lessons are based on California History Common Core Standards and we will cover the following big topics this year.

Origins of Democracy Industrial Revolution Imperialism Spread of Nationalism Modern Middle East French Revolution Rise of Fascism Cold War World War I World War II Globalization The Bolshevik Revolution Capitalism and Communism Class Materials (Mandatory):

 Each student must have a notebook, pen and binder with paper dedicated to the class.  The binder and the notebook are very important; students must bring these two items to class each day.

Grading:

Tests / Quiz’s / Final……………………………………..50%

Binder /Class notes / Homework / Projects……………………….50%

**Grades are based on a point system that will include: In-class assignments, homework, tests, presentations, reports, projects, Cornel notes and participation. **

I believe in a fair grading policy. I believe that failure is not an option. This is why I give my students as many opportunities as possible to make up any missing work and help my students improve their grade in my class. Please remember that grades will continually change throughout the semester. I will be using PowerSchool to post my grades on-line; grades will be updated within 72 hours or sooner. The students will receive grade updates and feedback every two weeks as we get close to the end of the semester it will be every week (on Fridays).

 Students will be expected to make up any missing work within a reasonable amount of time. Saturday school or after school detention will be given after the third missing assignment.

 I will also be available before school and after school for students to make up work or get help, but it is the responsibility of the students to come and make up late work and get extensions for late assignments.

Class Procedures

Each day will begin with an “essential question warm up”; these are short questions that will deal with things like geography, current events and general knowledge. Class time is spent on lectures, writing activities, public speaking presentations and individual reading / writing practice and feedback.

I believe in creating a positive classroom atmosphere that my students will actually enjoy, so my classroom rules are very simple. I will treat your children like my own, with encouragement and positive reinforcement every day that they attend my class.

 I expect my students to be respectful to each other and the teacher  I expect my students to be fair to one another and to the teacher  I expect my students to feel safe with each other and the teacher

Please sign and return to me by Friday August 22nd. Please also provide an email and phone number to contact you. I will be sending home and posting on-line a syllabus style outline for each month as we move through different sections of the textbook.
