Student Supply Needs:  Pencils (mandatory every day)  Colored pencils/markers (optional)  2-pocket folder  Science preprinted notebooks and science books will be provided! Students will be responsible for any damage they do to books or notebooks. Both books and notebooks will be kept in the classroom – however, students may ask permission to take them home if needed.  Primary Materials and Texts Used:  FOSS Modules  District developed materials for NGSS and STEM activities  Supplementary resources as needed   Methods of Instruction / Teaching Strategies: The modules that we will use are inquiry based and hands-on investigations which incorporate math, reading, and STEM strategies. Students will be learning appropriate lab behavior and develop skills for working in a group situation. All class instruction will be tied to mastery of standards.   Use of Technology: The FOSS modules include interactive CDs and videos. Internet sources will also be used to enhance lessons. Students will partake in both computer-based and iPad activities that foster engagement in mastering standards.   Means of Parent Communication: Check the class website weekly/bi-weekly for information about what we are learning in science class! The website will be updated at least every other weekend and is available at www.yourclasspage.com/5024858279. Choose your teacher’s name. If you click the “Be Notified” button, you will receive an email every time the site is updated. Phone messages may be left with the school office at 502-485-8279 or emailed at [email protected].  Behavior Plan: Student behavior will be addressed using the school-wide behavior plan. The detailed plan is outlined in the student agenda.   Communicating Grades: At any time, you can access current grades through the Parent Portal. It is the parents’ responsibility to monitor grades on Parent Portal. For usernames/passwords or issues accessing Parent Portal, email your child’s name to [email protected] . If you do not have computer access, send in a note and I will gladly print out grades. Report cards will be sent home at the end of the grading period, and paper copies of progress reports will be distributed halfway through each grading period.   How Grades will be Determined:  Student Engagement with Standards (20%)  Components: Group Work, Notebooks, Participation  Student Progression Toward Standards (30%)  Components: Homework, Quizzes, Self-Assessment, Projects showing progress  Homework is assigned every Monday and Tuesday night. Free homework slips will be awarded occasionally! Students are also expected to study review sheets for assessments.  Quizzes will be announced and students will have review materials to use for studying.  Student Mastery of Standards (50%)  Components: Proficiency Assessments, Performance Assessments, Projects showing mastery   Students are assigned grades based on the following scale:   Grad  Ranking e  90-  Distinguished 100 % A  80-  Proficient 89% B  70-  Apprentice 79% C  60-  Novice 69% D  Belo  Novice w 60% U    Late and Make-Up Work  I do not accept late work unless you were absent from school the day it was due! It is the students’ job to collect their makeup work from the designated area as soon as they return from school! According to JCPS policy, if you are absent from school, you have the number of school days you were absent, plus one day to make up and turn in the work.   Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!
