Materials: Management Information Systems by O’Brian, 8th Ed.

Description: The vast transformation of business caused by E-business and E-commerce applications of the Internet and related technologies demonstrates that information systems and information technologies are essential ingredients for business survival and success. The goal of this course is to help business students learn how to use and manage information technologies to revitalize business processes, conduct electronic commerce, improve business decision making, and gain competitive advantage. This course places a major emphasis on the role of the Internet, intranets, extranets, and other Internet technologies in providing a technology platform for electronic business, networked enterprises, and global markets.

Content: While this class is primarily a lecture class, students will be required to enter into discussions on current business issues as they relate to new technologies. The students will also be required to submit written case analysis and both individual and group oral presentations to the class. This is to help the student become more proficient with their oral and written communication skills. The individual written and oral presentations will be concerned with the various applications cases provided by the required reading material. The group oral presentation is accomplished in a group format and, therefore, the student is encouraged to enhance interpersonal skills. Grades: The final grade in this class will consist of:

Exam 50% Individual Case 15% Group Case 15% Homework 20%

Exams: The exams include mostly essay & short answer with limited multiple-choice portions. The essays & short answer questions require the students to be able to express themselves in proper form.

Cases: Each student will be required to read a case, prepare a short (5-10 minute) analysis, and discuss their conclusions with the class. Several of the cases deal with global issues and ethical issues. One of these cases is assigned to each individual below and one case is assigned to each group randomly assigned below. All cases will be presented to the class orally and the presentation should include answers to the case study questions indicated at the conclusion of the case in the text.

Homework: Students will be assigned homework from each chapter in the text. This homework is to be computer generated and kept in a folder to be collected at the conclusion of the semester.
